Since designing her first rug in 1999, Madeline Weinrib has established a reputation as a major textiles talent—from her graphic carpets to her fabrics featuring painterly interpretations of traditional Eastern motifs. In the Outer Sunset neighborhood of San Francisco, just blocks from where the city drops off into the Pacific, there’s a tiny coffee shop called Trouble Coffee. Beach-bound drivers might not notice the storefront, but nobody can miss the scene on Trouble’s curb. Where once a car would have been parked, there is now a “parklet”—a two-car-length enclosure built from reclaimedwood planter boxes and a massive, ocean-worn tree trunk. Customers sip coffee and linger longer here than they otherwise would inside the shop. “Trouble is only 200 square feet,” says Giulietta Carrelli, the shop’s owner, “so the parklet tripled our size and tripled our business.” Parking in San Francisco is famously difficult, so it’s almost unfathomable that residents would be in favor of making some of the city’s coveted spots…

Food—like design, architecture, music, and fashion—is a reflection of our culture. To me, what feels modern now is a pared-down simplicity that emphasizes details, employing textures and tastes in novel and exciting ways. I’m not talking about putting food into a siphon and turning it into foam. Rather, it’s about rethinking our preconceptions: borrowing spices and seasonings from other cultures, for instance, or contrasting ingredients that don’t typically go together. The trick is not to veer so far from the original that the end result is unrecognizable or uncomfortable. These recipes feature two of my favorite ingredients, used counterintuitively. Houston has always been a bucket-list destination for fans of the influential 20th-century artist Mark Rothko. The city is home to what is arguably his most important and enduring public work, the nondenominational Rothko Chapel, commissioned by the philanthropists John and Dominique de Menil. Morocco is a land of hot pinks and peaches, terra-cotta and sand. But when Caitlin and Samuel Dowe-Sandes bought a 1950s house in Gueliz, a neighborhood in the heart of modern Marrakech, they painted it in shades of inky blue, clear azure, and cool gray, animated by similar colors in the vividly patterned tiles they produce in their small factory in town. “In fact, we’ve gotten more colorful,” says Caitlin. And I got one—a sleek, pale gray German model with its own carrying case. With the aid of a manual, I taught myself how to type on that machine. It is hard now to fathom how important typewriters were for more than a century. They revolutionized business and transformed the lives of millions of women.
