Painter John McLaughlin had no formal education in art, except for the one he acquired by studying the abstract compositions of European modernists and Japanese and Chinese prints. In the 1930s, he studied language and culture in Japan, where he was particularly struck by the broad swaths of empty space in landscape and pastoral paintings— a Zen Buddhist notion known as ma (void), which was thought to encourage meditation. Many years ago I worked in Denmark, where I would shoot deer— with my camera. I would take the train north of Copenhagen to Dyrehaven, a large hunting ground created in 1669 for King Frederik III, which was opened as a public park nearly a century later. Today the park is still populated with wild deer, and I liked to watch them peek out of the bushes and then skitter away.
