I am impressed with a new book edited by Carl Dellatore, Interior Design Master Class: 100 Lessons from America’s Finest Designers on the Art of Decoration. It’s a handful of a title, and a hefty piece of work. Both fascinating and informative, it contains far more than pretty pictures. I’m not qualified to expound on Restraint, Integrity, Exuberance, or Nuance, which are among the topics addressed in the book. But when it comes to some more practical aspects of design, I have learned a thing or two. Here are a few: • IF IT ISN’T QUITE RIGHT, IT’S TOTALLY WRONG. Years ago, we needed a lamp for our bedroom, one to read by while sitting in our club chair. For some reason this proved to be elusive, and, after months,…

The People & Places Behind the Stories BEST OF NEW ENGLAND Boston-based designer Heather Wells, whose New Hampshire lake house is seen on page 206, is currently at work on a house in Big Sky, Montana, and she recently returned from a trip to Denmark to buy flooring. On days off, you’ll find her hunting for antiques in her own backyard. • “I just got back from Antiques Week in Manchester, New Hampshire. The focus is on New England Americana—painted furniture, tramp art, signs, game boards, and so on. I go every year and always find goodies, either for myself or clients. I know the dealers now. A few of my favorites are American Garage, which hails from Los Angeles; Steve Smoot Antiques from Lancaster, Pennsylvania; and Cherry Gallery,…
OLD FRIENDS Loulou de la Falaise, the Paris model and designer whose bohemian elegance epitomized Left Bank style, was both a muse to Yves Saint Laurent and a collaborator with the designer before her death in 2011. Now, thanks to her friend Ariel de Ravenel, editor of the biography Loulou de la Falaise (Rizzoli), the famed beauty’s jewelry designs are being reissued both in faithful reproductions and gently updated versions sold at Creel and Gow. Once again, de la Falaise’s layered, tasseled, and beaded creations, which incorporate colored pâte de verre and semiprecious stones, can be paired with a gold lamé turban or multiple silk headscarves, just as the muse herself might have done (creelandgow.com).
