LIGHTER THAN AIR Designers since ancient Egyptian times have known that when drama is required, nothing does the job like feathers. For fall 2017, fashion houses including Balenciaga and Prada sent models down the runway swathed in weightless, feathery creations. And there were precious accessories to match: Verdura’s Tiara Feather gold-and-diamond bracelet is inspired by a tiara worn by Betsey Whitney, one of the famous Cushing sisters, when her husband became American ambassador to the Court of St. James in 1956 (verdura.com); Tiffany & Co.’s Blue Book collection features both an exotic bird brooch encrusted with diamonds, sapphires, an emerald, and a spinel, and a bracelet of lush diamond-and-gold feathers (tiffany.com). SHORE ON PICTURING AMERICA In the 1970s, when most art photographers were still working in black and white, Stephen Shore captured America in eloquent, nuanced color. On cross-country driving trips made over a decade, Shore used a large-format camera to shoot revelatory images of what we see every day but rarely pay close attention to—a cat’s cradle of power lines, a plate of diner pancakes, a shuttered drive-in theater. Uncommon Places, a 1982 sampling of this work, became one of the most influential photo books of all time. For the recent Selected Works, 1973–1981 (Aperture), Shore, who directs the photography program at Bard College in New York’s Hudson Valley, asked 15 admirers—including filmmaker Wes Anderson, artist Ed Ruscha, and photographer Thomas Struth—to dive deeper into his archive of those seminal…

At this time of year, American farmers’ markets overflow with eggplant, that staple of Mediterranean cooking. These two simple recipes give the endlessly versatile vegetable the chance to shine. Sweet and sour–glazed eggplant is a popular menu item at my DBGB restaurant in downtown Manhattan and stars the long, pinkish-purple Japanese variety. Italian eggplants, the larger, dark purple variety, are grilled and topped with a lightly sautéed mélange of tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, and onions that evokes the iconic Provençal ratatouille. Either dish makes an ideal accompaniment to an alfresco meal of grilled fish or meat and a salad of peppery greens. If you’re a real eggplant lover, serve both as part of a meze-style spread. DESIGN IS SOMETIMES DISMISSED, by those who take themselves quite seriously, as unimportant or trivial. And certainly the industry does have its frivolities and fripperies. You could even argue—if you don’t care about living with beauty, joy, or ingenuity and are willing to dispense with a major form of selfexpression— that design is superfluous. But one argument nobody can make is that the design industry is not generous. That generosity is manifest throughout the year, but it becomes especially evident in the spring and summer. TOM DIXON 12 THINGS HE CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT Growing up in early 1980s London, Tom Dixon was energized by the try-anything spirit of punk. When a motorcycle accident cut short a budding music career, he learned to weld, fashioning more than 100 fantastical chairs out of scrap metal over a year. The self-taught designer has since brought his boundless imagination to lighting, office furniture, and hotel design, not to mention sex toys and sneakers. His S-Chair for Cappellini, modeled in 1986 from a doodle of a chicken, and his globe lamps, inspired by astronaut helmets, combine industrial chic and bling, chunky forms and shimmering surfaces. As Theodore Roosevelt wrote, “What true American does not enjoy a rocking chair?” Unlike, say, an elegant bergère or a dignified wingback, this New World invention is easygoing and unintimidating, solid yet kinetic— a chair for those who don’t like to sit still. “I grew up in Vermont, where there was a rocker on every porch, and I still love to see a row of them looking out at a view,” says New York designer Billy Cotton. But a rocking chair can also be refined enough to command space indoors. An upholstered version that’s strong and shapely—like Vladimir Kagan’s design from 1953—can easily anchor a living room. So strongly does a stripped-down, finely wrought New England aesthetic blow through Connecticut’s Litchfield Hills, tucked in the northwest corner of the state along the border of Massachusetts, that only those with truly fearless taste seem able to stand up to it—to decorate in counterpoint. Only the bold manage to reference the grace of the area’s centuries-old winding roads and well-preserved late-Colonial architecture while also going blithely off the rails. In art lingo, the terms emerging artist and young artist are often used interchangeably. So when the New York gallery Canada, known for identifying fresh talent, mounted a show last year featuring moody canvases of swimmers awash in luminous purples and blues and heavily indebted to abstraction, more than a few onlookers were startled to learn that the breakthrough works were painted by a 73-year-old grandmother. OVER THE COURSE of their 13-year partnership, interior designers John Kureck and Doug Jones have reconfigured and refurbished glam New York City townhouses, a mod mountaintop house in the Hudson Valley, and a Victorian hotel at the heart of a small Pennsylvania town. For a young couple—a husband in the financial industry with traditional tastes, and a wife who inclines toward the modern—the design duo made over a Greek Revival townhouse in Greenwich Village, keeping the original details but incorporating an energetic mix of contemporary furnishings.
