AT FIRST GLANCE, it might not seem that rock and roll and interior design have a lot in common. But as we were working on this A-List issue, I was also reading Bruce Springsteen’s autobiography, Born to Run, and came across a passage that I think applies to design—in fact, to any creative field. “Many of music’s most glorious moments feel as though they were birthed in an explosion of raw talent and creative instinct (some of them even were!)” he writes. “But . . . if you want to burn bright, hard and long, you will need to depend upon more than your initial instincts. You will need to develop some craft and a creative intelligence that will lead you farther when things get dicey. That’s what’ll help you…
INSPIRATION AT HAND “I nearly always design from a place of need,” says Richard Mishaan, who decorated the house in Amagansett, New York, featured on page 170. He also creates custom furniture for clients, as well as pieces for Bolier and Dering Hall. When he can’t find the right console for a client—say, one with the lines of a vintage piece but made from modern materials— Mishaan starts sketching. “My best pieces are born out of a specific situation, but they seem to fill the very same niche in the wider market,” he says. MULTIFACETED Senior market editor Catherine Lee Davis, a producer of the luxury-themed Inspiration feature that begins on page 91, has been developing her eye for precious stones and pearls since she was a young girl captivated…
SCAVOLINI Flux Swing, a collection by Giugiaro Design for Scavolini, represents an evolution in design from the original Flux concept introduced over 10 years ago. The new collection conceptualizes space as enabling a dialogue between the kitchen and living room areas in which the two can liaise perfectly with each another or act independently while maintaining a similar identity. The Flux Swing Kitchen (above left) stands out for its unique shape as well as for its stylish color combination of Sun Yellow and Titanium Grey. The Scavolini Flux screen independent living room solution (above right) is distinguished by wall units with Prestige White gloss lacquered shaped doors, to match with style the Alaska Blue gloss lacquered finish on the shelves and wall claddings. DREAM PALACES For much of the past century, painter Jeremiah Goodman has evocatively captured the living rooms, bedrooms, and libraries of some the world’s brightest stylesetters, producing glamorous portraits of spaces once inhabited by Greta Garbo, the Duchess of Windsor, and Tony Duquette. This spring, a retrospective of the 94-year-old artist’s work in Los Angeles brings together 55 of Goodman’s interior and garden scenes rendered in gouache, including several that have never been displayed in public, like his moody study of the chinoiserie sitting room of Betsy Bloomingdale’s Holmby Hills estate (through June 9; dessinfournir.com). EYE OF THE NEEDLE It was after her children had grown up and left home in 2010 that Jackie Villevoye decided to realize her lifelong dream of becoming a fashion designer by launching Jupe by…
