After becoming director of London’s Design Museum in 2006, Deyan Sudjic transformed the small but scrappy institution into one of the city’s most vital attractions. Summers may be short in Scandinavia, but the days are long, and architect Ninni Ryott wanted to enjoy every hour of the season. The diminutive country cottage she designed for her family— husband Iohn, an entrepreneur, and their five-year-old twins, Julie and Fred—celebrates tradition. The house, on an island about 30 miles southwest of Stockholm, is stylistically rooted in Sweden’s rustic vernacular. The property was once owned by the beloved Swedish folk singer Evert Taube and his wife, artist Astri Bergman Taube, who built a Bauhaus-style retreat here in 1937. That house was tragically burned to the ground in 1969 by a mad fan of the singer. My friend Vik Muniz is a Brazilian artist whose work at times incorporates food. He made a big portrait of me using sugar and chocolate, which hangs in my home, and a series of framed photographs of wine-stained napkins, which line the walls of Bar Boulud. A couple of years ago, I was asked to cook a candlelit dinner in Vik’s honor for 650 guests at New York’s Cathedral of Saint John the Divine. Vik and I have shared many Brazilian meals together over the years, and I knew right away what to prepare for the party: moqueca, a delicious seafood stew (my version comes from the northeastern state of Bahia). “I LIKE A WHITE WALL,” says Paul Mathieu. It’s a surprising statement for the French-born designer, who is known for his luxurious and meticulously wrought furniture and lighting. One signature project: the striking liturgical furniture he created for the 17thcentury Église de la Madeleine church in Aix-en-Provence, France, including a 12-arm chandelier handblown in Murano glass.
