DO THE LOCOMOTION “We want people to fall in love with fabric,” says Sabine Rothman, who helms the Hearst Design Group’s market department. Rothman teamed up with ELLE DECOR’s design director, Florentino Pamintuan, to create the exuberant Inspiration feature that begins on page 76. The pair share an affection for Wes Anderson’s 2007 film The Darjeeling Limited and designed a set modeled after the opulently decorated compartments of an Orient Express–style railroad snaking its way across India. The National Park Service was founded 100 years ago, just as cameras were becoming cheaper and easier to use. Photographers both amateur and professional—Ansel Adams at Yosemite, Eliot Porter at Glen Canyon—heightened the public’s awareness of these natural treasures. “Photography and America’s National Parks,” an exhibition of more than 170 works at the George Eastman Museum in Rochester, New York, ranges from classic shots by Eadweard Muybridge, Edward Weston, and others, to the cheeky collages of Mark Klett and Byron Wolfe, who combine fragments of vintage images with views of the contemporary landscape (June 4–October 2; eastman.org). Known for luxurious interiors with a zing of color (most frequently purple), Jamie Drake hasn’t maintained his place atop the design world by sticking to the tried-and-true. “I believe in evolution,” says the vivacious New Yorker, who is currently working on homes in London, Texas, and midtown Manhattan, and whose many collaborations include rugs for Stark and bath fixtures for THG. REDEFINING BEAUTY Was there an artist who captured the in-your-face glamour of the 1970s and ’80s quite like Antonio Lopez? The Puerto Rican–born illustrator quickly rose to the height of the fashion world, sketching fiery, flamboyant pencil, charcoal, and watercolor portraits of models, musicians, and scenesters for Elle, Women’s Wear Daily, Vogue, and other publications, as well as collaborating with and inspiring such designers as Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent. Most people have favorite words that summon, for them, a special story. Summer afternoon, say. Christmas morning. For Los Angeles–based designers Waldo Fernandez and Tommy Clements, that word is pied-à-terre. And they’ve made the story that word evokes flower at the elegant eastern edge of New York’s West Village. Havana-born Fernandez is a design star of four decades’ standing, with a client list that includes Hollywood royalty, while Clements, who works with his mother, Kathleen, is the designer of choice for certain stars whose first names say it all. It is ironic that the activities that elicit this adjective are often those requiring the most rigorous training, the most exhausting effort, and the most extreme discomfort—a ballet dancer performing endless pirouettes, a diver executing a flawless triple flip off the platform, a gymnast pulling off a perfect dismount from the parallel bars. It is the triumph of artistry that the sweat never shows. Brilliant performers understand that the less they reveal about how hard they are working, the more appreciation and awe their moves will evoke. What designers do may involve less sweat (usually), but in some ways it is not that different. WILLIAMS ON A DESIGNER’S EDUCATION “You can never go inside enough rooms,” says Bunny Williams. A lifelong student of design, the Virginia native moved to Manhattan in the 1960s and was hired by legendary decorators Sister Parish and Albert Hadley. Williams founded her own firm in 1988 with a pioneering approach rooted in striking the perfect balance, whether between traditional and modern, indoors and out, or casual and elegant. Along the way, she has written several books—including A House by the Sea (Abrams), out this fall—and started her own furniture line. Today, she creates collections for such firms as Lee Jofa and Ballard Designs and is working on projects ranging from a Georgian home in Ohio to an office building in Mexico City. When the season begins to turn warm, my thoughts and culinary impulses almost always turn to Provence. More than just a tourist destination, the region embodies a state of mind. It is about shopping for fresh ingredients each morning at wonderful local markets, returning home with baskets of just-picked vegetables and herbs, and creating light and tasty meals of simply prepared antipasti. Last summer, my family and I rented the former home of cooking instructor Simone Beck in Valbonne. She was Julia Child’s coauthor on Mastering the Art of French Cooking and, in fact, Julia and her husband lived next door for many years. An interior designer’s goal is to make each project unique—a reflection of the client’s distinctive character, rather than a reiteration of the decorator’s own tastes and tics. But for Alex Papachristidis, the stakes may be higher than for others in his field. That’s because so many of his clients spend time in one another’s houses. Take David Earls and Samantha Rudin Earls, for example, whose Upper East Side Manhattan apartment he recently completed: Her parents and her brother and sister-in-law live in homes designed by Papachristidis as well—as does the designer himself, who happens to be Samantha’s uncle.
