That was the title of an exhibition of contemporary painting at New York’s Museum of Modern Art this past winter. The show, with works by 17 artists, was controversial, as any survey tends to be. And though I may have been in the minority, I enjoyed it greatly. The thesis of the exhibition was that an artist working today is obliged to deal with all of history; that with new technologies— Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, hundreds of television channels—and the Internet, the past has become not only accessible but inescapable. Deborah Osburn’s company, Clé Tile, has carved out a sweet spot where the ageold art of tile meets the brand-new digital world. The endeavor is an outgrowth of her blog, Tile Envy, which she started as an inspirational antidote to the burnout she’d developed over several decades spent running industrial tile operations. “There are people out there making amazing tiles and no one will ever see them,” Osburn laments, “because our industry just wants one thing.” She began blogging about artists who use ceramic, porcelain, or concrete as their medium, and before long, her readers began asking how to buy what they were seeing. Suzanne Kasler is a native of Indianapolis, but it was her move to Atlanta 18 years ago that galvanized her career as a designer. “There is a huge love of homes in the South,” she says. “And it’s not just about decorating—it’s about living.” A pioneer of interiors that are traditional but never stuffy, Kasler is renowned for the romantic spaces she created for Tennessee’s Blackberry Farm resort. JK: Sometime in the 1860s, during the great rebuilding of Paris, but it was originally two houses, designed in the Haussmann style typical of that period. When Robert Long was just two years old, he and his older brother survived a car accident that took the life of his father, the lighting designer Robert Long, as well as his mother, his grandmother, and another brother. His father, who had struck out for California from his native Savannah, Georgia, in the early 1960s in search of a platform for his post-Bauhaus-style pieces, produced his first catalog in 1967, the same year that tragedy befell him. Thirty years later, Long was rifling through a box of family memorabilia when he came upon a copy of the catalog. Fresh berries at the height of ripeness are delicious all on their own. Put them in a dessert and they are nothing short of sublime. You must take care, though, not to overwhelm the fruit’s perfect sweetness. A delicate panna cotta—or as we call it in France, a blancmanger— is the perfect vehicle. This molded dessert is usually made with milk or cream and sugar and thickened with gelatin or cornstarch. The recipe goes back to the Middle Ages and has variations around the world, from Turkish muhallebi to Bavarian cream.
