Ten years ago, when fashion designer Lorry Newhouse bought a Southampton garçonnière, or bachelor pad, tucked behind a white picket fence covered in pink roses, she intentionally kept many of the previous owner's decorative elements, including the pink wallpaper dotted with gold stars in a guest bathroom, and the sunken tub and taffeta swag curtains in the master bath. It wasn't for a lack of decorating ideas, but more in homage to the place's rich history. The previous owner, Ronald Grimaldi, had for four decades been the right hand to 20th-century design icon Rose Cumming. As president of Cumming's company and, later, guardian of her legacy, Grimaldi shared Cumming's penchant for chintz wallpaper, eclectic patterns, and bold colors. GROWTH FUND For our special gardening report (pages 70 to 74), Susan Lowry and Nancy Berner—who have collaborated on books about the gardens of New Jersey and the Hudson Valley, and who are neighbors in Cold Spring, New York—talked to rising stars in the field and investigated new trends. In a high-tech world that is increasingly being fashioned from glass and steel, the simple brick can sometimes feel a touch analog. And yet as Brick (Phaidon, $50), a new book by English architect William Hall, makes clear, one of the world's oldest man-made building materials has always been, and continues to be, capable of soaring to new heights. In his introduction, Hall quotes architect Louis Kahn's famous dialogue with a block: "You say to a brick, 'What do you want, brick?' And brick says to you, 'I like an arch.'" Soraya Osorio has been ordering brass, bronze, and steel from the same distributor for years. And like any long-standing business acquaintances, the two have developed a rapport. "Give me a good piece," the furniture designer will implore. "Make sure what you choose is beautiful." At this, the salesman will make a show of exasperation. "You want beautiful?" But inevitably, he makes sure Osorio gets the order she wants, the cold-finished steel bars cleanly cut, the brass plates smooth and unwarped. Like a good jazz riff, drinks tables are all about improvisational moments. They don't help define the basic structure of a room, steadfastly flanking a sofa or supporting primary lamps. Instead, they get called into action when a room is in use, moved around as needed for impromptu gatherings, festive situations, and intimate tête-à-têtes. The best ones add a dash of style to any space as small, sculptural elements. "Because of their scale, drinks tables are easy to take a chance on," says designer Elizabeth Bolognino. The main view is to the west, so we overlook a very modern sector that includes the Flaminio Stadium, which was built for the 1960 Olympics. ED: Was it ever a one-family home? When a home has remained in the same family for 800 years, there is bound to be a renegade ancestor or two who chooses popular style over preservation. But at Churburg Castle, a medieval stronghold in northern Italy, succession brought good behavior with it—for the most part. Built by the region's bishop in the mid-13th century, the fortress was overtaken by the Matsch family 30 years later. That family line came to an end in the 16th century with Barbara Matsch, and so her husband, Jakob Trapp, found himself in possession of the ancestral home. The couple transformed the castle, which had seen a series of expansions in the Gothic and Renaissance vernaculars, into a modern Renaissance-style residence, which is how it remains today. Each spring, I am reminded of a French proverb: En avril, ne te découvre pas d'un fil. The translation is, In April, do not take off a thread. In other words, at this time of year, spring may be in the air, but don't pack away those winter sweaters and coats just yet. I created this beef brisket for a season in transition. With the weather still cool, most people crave nourishing comfort food. This brisket—which is marinated for 24 hours and then braised for four—is incredibly satisfying. And yet I tilt the meal toward the coming season by incorporating some of the delicate spring vegetables that we are beginning to see in the market: young carrots, fresh fava beans, and baby turnips. With its deep taupe walls, Adam-style armchairs, and 18th-century Swedish crystal chandelier, the dining room is elegantly appointed, as befits its purpose.
