ELLE DECOR: Park House is just outside of Melbourne. What is the surrounding neighborhood like? MICHAEL LEETON: It’s in a suburb called Hawthorn, but it’s close enough to the city that you can see the skyline from the back of the house. Hawthorn is a mixed area with original Edwardian cottages and later homes and apartment buildings, particularly from the 1950s and ’60s. We razed an old cottage on the property. ED: Who was involved in the project? Moules marinières—mussels steamed with white wine, butter, and shallots—is the most popular recipe for this shellfish in France. But I’ve always been partial to a sauce poulette. It has a rich broth, made with a touch of cream and butter, but it’s still light enough to pair with seafood. I love to combine mussels prepared this way with pasta for a dinner time entrée. Start with the freshest bivalves you can find. Any variety will work, but my current favorite is British Columbia’s sweet honey mussels, which are grown on ropes in tested waters. For Vik Muniz, the medium has always dovetailed with the message. The Brazilian has become an art-world superstar for his re-creations of canonical artworks in such materials as sugar, trash, or—in the case of the Mona Lisa—peanut butter and jelly. Muniz divides his time between Brooklyn and Rio de Janeiro, where he renovated a 1968 house designed by midcentury architect Jorge Hue. “It sits next to the jungle, so I have monkeys and opossums in my garden,” he says. JAYNE ON RENEWING TRADITION Thomas Jayne has an outsize reputation—and not only because, at 6′7″, he is usually the tallest person in the room.
