More than just a paean to an architectural style, Cape Cod Modern (Metropolis Books) illuminates a rich, under-examined moment—from 1938 to 1977—when the towns of the Outer Cape drew a hyper-creative crowd of design-besotted artists and intellectuals, in addition to the traditional vacationing psychoanalysts who head there each August. Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer, and other members of their émigré Bauhaus tribe cavorted with bohemian Boston Brahmins, and just about everyone built themselves simple retreats that expressed the organic cross-pollination of vernacular building traditions, Yankee economy, and Bauhaus rigor. Paris-based designer Thierry Lemaire attributes his love of interiors to his mother. "She has an incredible talent for decoration," he says. "Our homes were always extremely sophisticated." They were not, however, particularly practical. "During my youth," he recalls, "we never had a sofa." Lemaire initially trained and worked as an architect before switching to interior design in the mid-1990s. His commissions have encompassed a duplex in Beirut, a dozen chalets in Gstaad, Switzerland, and several apartments in Paris, including one whose sitting room walls are clad entirely in Versailles parquet. The master bedroom in William Abranowicz and Andrea Raisfeld's home in Bedford, New York, is a luminous retreat with a cathedral ceiling inspired by a 13th-century Swedish church and a glamorous white-tile bathroom. It was the first space the couple renovated when they bought a run-down ranch house in Westchester County, and they love how the room turned out. But it's not where they choose to sleep from May to November. Instead, come spring, and right up until the first frost, the couple spend their nights on a futon bed, complete with an electric blanket, located on the screened porch next to their kitchen. "We love listening to the sounds of owls and foxes, and if it's raining, you get misty waves of wind," Raisfeld says. "It's like our cabin."…

BEAVERS ARE UNRELIABLE. Who knew? Not Benoist Drut, who fell in love with a 35-acre parcel of land in part because it featured an idyllic little pond, beside which he planned to build a weekend house. Shortly after purchasing the property, Drut drove the two hours from New York City only to discover that "the busy beavers," as he calls them, had completely disappeared—along with the pond formed by their dam. While studying architecture at the University of Washington in the late 1960s, Steven Holl declared that he wanted to become an artist instead. "I wouldn't do that if I were you," said his art teacher, who gave him a C in painting for the year. Holl famously went on to make a name as one of America's preeminent architects, but art remains at the heart of everything he does. Many of his projects—from the glowing Bloch Building at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri, to his recently unveiled matte-glass extension to Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Glasgow School of Art—have art at their essence. One of my favorite summer desserts is a verrine. The word comes from verre, French for "glass," and with this recipe the medium is indeed the message: The dessert is composed like an English trifle or parfait and served individually in clear containers. The transparency allows you to see each colorful layer. One can also go the savory route; a crab-and-tomato verrine, for example, could make a terrific appetizer. But the most popular variation is sweet, such as this combination of cherry, white chocolate, pistachio, and verbena. As with many recipes, the key is to use a variety of textures and flavors, each element enhancing the others. The pistachio pound cake has a slight crunch, while the white chocolate–and–lemon verbena mousse is creamy and refreshing. I alternate these ingredients with…

"YOU MIGHT SAY MY AESTHETIC is more maids' quarters than lord of the manor," Karl Kipfmueller says, laughing. The affable artist, whose home in the Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn would today command a princely sum by any measure, has lived in New York City's most sought-after borough since his graduate school days at the nearby Pratt Institute, where he studied painting. Built in 1864 in the French Empire style, his home has a glamorously decaying facade that stands out among the turn-of-the-century Italianate brownstones that define the neighborhood. Born in 1911 to loving parents who curtailed their food intake so they could afford paints for their artistic daughter, Mary Blair grew up to study illustration and then joined the animation team at Disney. She was soon one of Uncle Walt's favorites. On a trip to South America, she became enamored of the clothing and folk art, incorporating their bold hues into her work. Her concept paintings and color schemes brought Cinderella, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and other films to enchanting life. Ask anyone not from around Boston—Hollywood types, especially—to characterize the city, and you're likely to get a few botched attempts at the Yankee accent, a crack about the famously bad drivers (fine; deserved), and, despite the lingering mob association, the overall sense that the ethos is as staid and buttoned-up as the pearls-and-cable-knit aesthetic.
