A desert home by Lake Flato Architects in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Since 1984—long before green building was an idea, let alone a practice—the San Antonio, Texas–based architecture firm Lake Flato has been creating lyrical structures from local materials, thoughtfully sited in response to the demands and opportunities of their particular environments. Lake Flato Houses: Embracing the Landscape (University of Texas Press) showcases a selection of stunning residences designed by the firm since 1999. Deep porches harmonize indoors with out, limestone walls keep interiors cool, and recycled oil-field pipes are transformed into structural beams. Chapters are arranged, appropriately, by habitat: brushland, desert, hillside, mountains, city, and water.
