Deborah Berke is gearing up for a busy summer. In June, the New York architect known for her graceful minimalism will launch her new book, House Rules: An Architect’s Guide to Modern Life (Rizzoli). It distills the lessons she has learned over two decades of designing houses, ranging from city lofts to suburban homes to beach cottages. ON THE SUNNY SIDE Giuseppe Picone may have been born in Naples, Italy, but he looked northward for inspiration. The designer fused the bright colors and Matisselike graphics of Marimekko and other Scandinavian firms with sunny Italian and Mediterranean motifs—including a smiling sun and Picone’s signature, a pintsize Italian Jesuit priest attired in a robe and hat, which popped up on everything from teacups to tiles. After exhibiting his ceramics alongside Gio Ponti in the early 1950s, Picone brought his patterns to clothing and textiles, setting up a workshop in Rome and tapping into the sense of play that defined the fashions of the ’60s and ’70s. Inès de la Fressange is the quintessential Parisian—so much so that the former model was asked to lend her likeness to the bust of Marianne, symbol of the French Republic. She fell out with Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld over that move (he deemed it too bourgeois) but later reinvented herself as a fashion designer and global ambassador of Gallic style. Today, she is busier than ever. She was venerated by the likes of Jean Cocteau, Elsa Schiaparelli, and Diana Vreeland and counted the writer Colette as both friend and client. The questions of what to paint and how to paint it are hardly revolutionary for contemporary artists. Plenty of painters continue to weigh the relative merits of representation and abstraction and experiment with newfangled tools to accomplish the ageold task of applying pigment to canvas. But artist Ruth Root is challenging some of the most basic assumptions about the medium. In her latest work, Root has stripped traditional painting down to its skivvies—the stretcher, the canvas, even the mechanism for attaching it to the wall—and inverted the components. The canvas, in her reimagining a digitally printed fabric, is now the support holding aloft the rigid structure, in this case a sheet of Plexiglas, which she has painted. Gnocchi is one of the staple dishes of Italian cuisine, but the version most of us are familiar with is not the original preparation. Today these small dumplings are often made of potato, a vegetable that is not even native to Italy. In fact, quite a few mainstays of that country’s famous repertoire were imported from the New World in the late 15th century. These ingredients include the corn that is ground for polenta and the tomatoes that are simmered for marinara and Bolognese sauce, as well as potatoes. When Martin Raffone and William McIntosh, successful interior designers from New York, began the process of renovating a riad they had purchased in the medina of Marrakech, they did what they would normally do for any of their clients: They spent several months meticulously preparing professional construction documents. “That was a big mistake,” McIntosh says with a laugh. “I doubt anyone ever looked at them once.” Five years after finally completing the house, a narrow, two-story building with a rooftop terrace, a small central courtyard, and an attached studio apartment, the couple can make fun of their learning curve. “We understood pretty quickly that it does not work in Marrakech the way it works in Manhattan,” says Raffone. “It’s a much more organic process.
