How much gaming has matured as a medium is still difficult to say conclusively, and this month’s crop of releases don’t make it any easier. One thing’s for sure: producing a game such as Split Fiction or Monster Hunter Wilds requires a certain maturity, in order to direct the talents of many towards a highly polished, clearly defined end. Conversely, if maturity is a matter of creating gritty, unflinching portraits of reality, there’s little of that to be seen overtly in our lineup, nor on commercial gaming’s wider release slate.
