An old subway token from Philadelphia. One Turkish lira found on an Istanbul street on a really good day. A vintage ashtray from the (West) Berlin Hilton, acquired at a Minnesota flea market. These and many more objects that I’ve picked up while traveling are scattered around my Brooklyn apartment on more or less public display. Not just mementos from trips taken, they are reminders of the way travel has shaped how I think and what I value—enough so that they’ve become part of the design of my house. When faced with an unappealing brick wall and white ceiling in my otherwise wood-paneled sunporch, I had to go green. My brother Lyndon gave me these Murano glass orbs to mark big occasions. He gave me the first one—with the millefiori pattern and small white stars—when I graduated from law school. It came new, in a box with a ribbon, and the presentation was beautiful. It’s more grown-up than the other two, which were bought secondhand. The blood-colored one was a gift for my 30th birthday, and the one with the “snakeskin” ribbon was when I moved back to Austin, Texas, from New York City. In the heart of downtown Kyoto, mere steps from the grounds of the old Imperial Palace, a narrow stone-paved alley runs through a pocket of historic homes. There’s an undeniable magnetism to this old lane lined with small wooden houses, where neighbors are like family and nostalgia for simpler days hangs in the air. Traffic noise from a busy adjacent avenue is barely audible, and only the occasional passerby from the nearby subway station reminds us that this is in fact modern Kyoto, not the ancient capital of centuries past. It was in this liminal space between worlds that Christopher Flechtner and Junko Uchiyama found their home. When Robert Burley and Debra Friedman needed more space, they found it in their own backyard. The couple’s house in Toronto’s Danforth neighborhood had suited their family of five. But in 2019, Robert and Debra, both professional photographers, decided it was time to add a home studio. They started eyeing the parking pad behind their house, past a mature smoke tree and Debra’s clusters of perennials. The concrete patch opened onto a midblock laneway, and they concluded that it would be much better used as a workplace than a parking space. I was graduating from college, and something called a mortgage-backed security had significantly limited my life’s prospects.
