IT’S BEEN reported that one to two people commit suicide every hour in South Africa, while more than 20 attempt suicide each day. Shockingly, an estimated 7 582 suicides occur in our country each year. These alarming figures were revealed by Professor Lourens Schlebusch, a researcher at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Professor Schlebusch’s research further shows that about 11 % of all non-natural deaths in South Africa are suicide related. According to his studies, stress could be a significant contributing factor to people attempting and/or committing suicide. Methods used to end lives are hanging (36,2 %), shooting (35 %), poisoning (9,8 %), gassing (6,5 %) and burning (4,1 %). TREVOR GUMBI was shocked when he was told to get off the red carpet, because it was only reserved for MTV talent. GREEN PEA AND BACON SOUP You can add sugar beans and other green vegetables of your choice to this soup. PREPARATION: 5 MIN COOKING: 13 MIN SERVES 4-6 15 ml (1 tbsp) olive oil2 cloves garlic, crushed4 leeks, sliced300 g frozen peas, defrosted2 large handfuls of spinach leaves750 ml (3 cups) vegetable stock200 g bacon bits, cooked 1 In a saucepan over medium heat, heat the oil and add the garlic and leeks. The 36-year-old is a Geographic information systems (GIS) analyst for Anglo American Platinum in Johannesburg.
