Should I think about all the depressing details – state capture, petrol price, interest rate hikes, global disasters, crime, the cost of living, the state of our economy? There were loud cheers when Stats SA recently reported SA had achieved GDP growth of 2,2% for the third quarter – meaning the country is officially out of recession. But we’re not out of the woods yet. Overall growth for the year is still predicted to come in at less than 1% and things aren’t looking much better for 2019. Medical aid schemes don’t cover gender-affirming treatments as they’re considered cosmetic surgeries. According to a survey of six of the country’s largest medical aid schemes, the Government Employees Medical Scheme (Gems), Fedhealth and Profmed require members on hormone-replacement treatment to pay for the chronic medication out of their medical savings. Momentum Health and Bonitas declined to comment but Discovery is running a pilot programme that pays for surgery as well as hormonal treatment. So far it has approved care for two out of five patients who applied to be part of the programme.
