In the early 1970s, a decade after he left painting behind to create large-scale three-dimensional works, Donald Judd designed his first piece of furniture. It was an act of necessity; he needed beds for his two young children, Rainer and Flavin, who shared a room. Made of wood and featuring a central freestanding wall that doubled as a divider for privacy, the first iteration of Judd’s now iconic daybed was born. A desk, dining table, chairs, benches, and bookshelves soon followed—all variations of meticulously pared-down forms defined by function. Much like Judd’s art, an enterprise he considered completely separate, the furniture nevertheless emanates a timeless beauty—appearing both solid yet weightless in a space, akin to the stacking boxes and progressions in galvanized steel, plexiglass, and concrete that came to define…

Looking back on my life in California, it’s easy to see how design and entertaining became so central to my work. My fondest memories revolve around the kitchen and dining table. When I opened my eponymous Los Angeles antiques store in 2002, the first thing I did was install a kitchen. It was tiny and had no high-tech equipment, but it worked! I started small, hosting dinners with friends (I knew they wouldn’t judge if it was a little awkward eating in a shop). Looking back, it was probably the syncopated beat blasting through our street-facing bedroom window until 4 a.m. that finally pushed me and my husband, Jonathon, into the welcoming arms of upstate New York. Our home search started optimistically enough. We focused on everywhere two hours north of the city, but while Jonathon was drawn to the pastoral hills of Bovina, I balked at the three-hour drive. Turns out tacking on an extra 60 minutes opens the door to possibilities. The house we ended up buying—a farmhouse circa 1893—was the first we looked at that day, and the 18th overall. BEAD TIME It seems like Susan Alexandra was made to work in color—her beaded bags and enamel pieces match an exuberant personality. Finding her style was an unconventional process. After realizing her talent in fine metalwork was lacking, Alexandra began enameling the items, painting over wonky seams and soldering errors. “Not knowing the proper jewelry ‘rules’ sometimes enables me to create weirder—i.e., cooler—things,” the designer explains.
