We are very proud to announce that our Australian Alicia Toner has received an award as a Rising Star for her reborning and sculpting, painting her own prototypes and doing it all with a smile at the R.O.S.E. International Doll and Teddy Bear Exhibition at Denver, Colorado, USA. Alicia has been reborning for several years now, and started with learning to paint reborn sculpts she bought from overseas or from suppliers in Australia. Alicia was a fast learner and very quickly decided that she would get some clay and start to learn to sculpt. She started with tiny little mouse babies, so very cute (I have one of Alicia’s sculpts). A chat with Barb Taylor, Glenda Frazer and Pat Jesse quickly reveals that Bundaberg, a thriving arts and crafts community on Queensland’s central coast, is blessed with many talented doll makers and crafters who are passionate about keeping the arts and crafts alive. My husband Norm and I have just returned from a wonderful trip with Claire Doll and Bear Tours. The highlight of the tour was our group’s private visit to one of Germany’s best known doll dealers and collectors, Ruth Jacobs. As a child she was always a lover of dolls and bears. Ruth first discovered the wonderful world of antique dolls 40 years ago when she found an AM390 in a flea market in Cologne. She was “hooked” and has never lost her fascination with antique dolls. When she found her first Jumeau, that was it! From then on her great love has been the French dolls, with a special love of the French Fashions and their wonderful original clothes. The Sunrayisa Doll and Teddy Bear show was again a great success. The new hall at the at the Lutheran college is bright, warm and very welcoming. The sun shone most of the weekend and it was very nice to sit in the sun drinking a cup of tea. This year’s theme was Rock and Roll. Some made the effort to dress up and they all looked great. There was a nice flow of people through the door for most of the two days. Catering as usual was excellent and lots of cups of tea and coffee were had by many. All the profits from catering went to the Sunrayisa Cancer Recourses. Many of the usual traders were in attendance; for instance, Artic Design’s were there with some very interesting…

Dear Ed I’m so excited. I’ve officially retired and my husband and I will soon be heading off to Paris for our ‘second honeymoon’. Debbie lives in an old school house in the village of Birralee, in northern Tasmania, just outside of Launceston. Penrith Dolls, Bears, Craft and Collectables show was held on Sunday 28 June at Panthers Exhibition Pavilion, Penrith, NSW. There was an excited queue of visitors waiting when the show opened at 10am. With more than 100 trading tables, there was plenty on offer for everyone, from collectors of antique, vintage and modern dolls and toys to people looking for wonderful handmade craft items. The numbers of visitors was up on last year’s event, with people travelling from as far as Cootamundra and Bega as well as the regular visitors from Canberra and Lithgow. Today we are used to dolls that move or actually do things - just have a look at what is on offer in many toy shops. Automata, or dolls that move, have been around for a long time, with various levels of complexity in their ability to move. The example I am sharing with you today is one of the more simple automata – it is a crying baby which opens its mouth when crying. This action occurs when you press his tummy, which has a concealed bellows mechanism. Whilst we don’t have a definitive identification of the maker of this doll, he is most certainly of German manufacture, looking like a cross between a Patents Washable and a modified version of a Motschmann baby, with a date of manufacture…

PAINTING THE FACE Begin by putting a bit of green colour into the parts of the face that are deep and dark (inside of eyes, under bottom lip, nostrils, down sides of nose, inside ears, et cetera) using a soft pencil. Colour over and beyond this with a soft reddish brown (henna is good), also redden cheeks. Use a scrap of skin fabric with pencil drawn on it to gradually shade red colour away to nothing – no sharp lines where colour finishes. On October 24 and 25, the famous event venue ‘Brabanthallen’, in the centre of the Netherlands will be transformed into a vibrant fair.
