In April I travelled to Teddys Bits in Baulkham Hills, NSW for a workshop. A lovely three days were spent creating some reindeers, Suzi Q and Rosie. And then in July I travelled to Ginger Bears in Benalla in Victoria for a two day workshop. There we made a few more Suzi Q’s and Frosty. All the fur for Suzi Q was hand dyed and it was amazing to see how different the colours turned out. Thank you to all the ladies who attended these workshops and for the two shops for organising them. I had a wonderful time sharing tips and techniques. Gather together all your materials, bisque, paints and tools and lay them all out (see Fig 1).These are what I had on hand, but let these projects be the inspiration for your own Christmas gifts. CHERUB MATERIALS • Porcelain bisque cherub or similar ornament in white bisque • Assorted metallic china paints • China paints: Hair Brown, Kiss Me Pink, Best Black, Black/Brown, Copenhagen Blue • Air dry gloss varnish • Dry glitter • Assorted brushes • N.B. I grew up in a little village In Friesland, the northern part of the Netherlands. I come from a small family: father, mother and one brother. When I met my partner we moved to Joure, also a village in Friesland. I work at a daycare center with mentally disabled adults three days a week. It’s a nice job because every day is different. I started making bears in 1992. At the time I would make one every now and then and tried a few different patterns. While I was visiting a fair I saw the most wonderful bears. On Saturday 28 May 2016, the Porcelain Dollmakers Guild of Sydney Southern Districts held its Annual Doll, Bear and Craft Show at the Sutherland United Services Club, NSW. The day was very cold and rainy, but that didn’t stop the visitors from coming to see the displays of Dolls, Bears and Miniatures. We profile inspirational bear artists Lyn Clapham and Anjo Kirst, and our projects include Milton, by Linda Bean, who have all bear lovers wanting to make him. This project, which was begun in early 2015, was finally completed in May 2016. Some time ago, in a Theriaults Auction Catalogue, I came across a lovely example of an antique autamton. It was made circa 1888 by the French firm Vichy, which specialised in the production of mechanical toys. This particular one featured a beautiful lady doll playing a piano-harp type instrument. Because I love to both research and reproduce antique dolls, I was drawn to the idea of making my own replica of this wonderful piece. The head used in the original version is a portrait Jumeau lady. Jesse is a lifelike/reborn vinyl doll, her height and weight is equivalent to a 5-year-old child. Jesse has ball-jointed arms which are full length. Her legs are cloth on top and vinyl below the knee. Jesse has a full vinyl upper body torso, both back and front. She has a full custom-made armature installed as a spine which connects through to her head to provide her with a rigid stable upper body support. It was great fun to create such a sweet girl and to select clothing that would suit her. It was particularly challenging to find clothing and footwear that not only looked nice but would fit a doll that is so big with limited flexibility. Cindy started her extensive and exquisite doll collection after surviving the devastating Cyclone Tracy in 1974, in Darwin. Losing her home and possessions, Cindy says the cyclone was horrifying. “The cyclone started on Christmas Eve and it rained for weeks and weeks,” Cindy remembers. “When the cyclone was in full force, my family took shelter in the laundry, with our 16 birds and two dogs. Then the walls caved in and the roof blew off. We then hid in the bathroom. We watched the house next door fly away. The only thing which survived from the next door neighbours’ house was the toilet. A couple of months ago we had an appeal for help to find a doll pattern. It started with an email: Dear Deb I am hoping that you could help through your magazine in searching for a doll maker who would have made a “Jess” doll from Dolls from Down Under. I bought the complete greenware kit at a doll show, and am now in the process of making her with the help of my good friend who subscribes to your magazine. I am only a beginner. Australian sculptor Jade Warner is working overtime with her sculpting, creating several sculpts including Daisy Mouse, which is a gorgeous combination of a baby face with mouse ears and paws and a lower vinyl body with tail and a cloth body top. Daisy is a 9-10” mouse and is so cute. She could be just painted or a little fur (hair) added for authenticity. You will love her, and a great idea would be to buy two and make a boy and a girl mouse. I can’t wait to work on the ones I have ordered. Daisy has full arms and full legs. Collecting prams is a great way to display dolls, but not every collector has the room . . . so collecting small prams can solves this dilemma. The biggest pram pictured here is about 30cm long, and the smallest is around 3cm. It is interesting to see the wide variety of small doll prams that have been manufactured over the years. From the early pressed metal to the celluloid and then to the 1950s tin and hard plastic, they all make a delightful accessory to display with small dolls. It is lovely to be able to display tiny dolls in the prams, with slightly larger dolls grouped around. In conjunction with the reopening of its permanent galleries, the Musée de la Poupée-Paris team launched a temporary exhibition, “Fashion Dolls under Napoleon III”. Comprising 24 enclosures, it begins with a look at different types of dolls made during the reign of Napoleon III, progresses to a collection of a few dolls and their rich original trousseaus, then completes its journey with the famous doll Chiffonnette and her legendary handmade wardrobe by talented American specialist Sylvia Mac Neil.
