The convention doll for the 2016 Doll Artisan Guild Supported Convention, held this year in April in Waitara, NSW, was a lovely German lady doll by Baehr & Proeschild. A shoulder head doll with domed head, on a cloth body with leather boots, the doll is only marked with an ‘8’ at the base of the shoulderplate. She has fixed paper-weighted eyes. The head is beautifully painted with lush black eyelashes, multi-stroked brown brows and generously painted lips with a single dark accent line in the centre. Self-taught reborn doll artist Danielle Amelia has had a love of baby dolls all her life. Since her childhood, she was always practicing to be a mum, fondly remembering feeding and dressing her baby dolls and taking them for walks in their prams. As the years have passed, Danielle has never really lost her passion for her favourite toys, and so her career as a reborn doll artist comes as no surprise. TO MAKE THE TABLE, Take the four spindles and cut off the node at the top of the longest square end of the spindle and sand the node that sits at the bottom of the smallest square. For the tabletop, cut 1 x 60mm x 100mm and sand all the edges of the top surface only. Make your drop leaves 2 x 100mm x 20mm, and sand all the edges of the top surface only. If you want to stain this piece, do so now. Here is a little tip, stain both sides of the tabletop but use a cloth to wipe on and wipe into the cardboard. A wonderful day was had by all once again with Libby Richardson of Artsmart Craft Cottage and guest designers Melissa Grant from One Day in May and Liz Stanway from Teddlywinks on Saturday 19th March and Sunday 20th March 2016 at the Bayswater Senior Citizen Centre. Needle felted bears are constructed in a very different way to traditional bear patterns, with plenty of room for artistic variation. This pattern is a guideline for the making of the bear, but everybody will construct their bear in their own unique way. Every piece of added fleece and every poke of the needle changes the piece you are working on. The appeal of small dolls is universal, maybe it harks back to our childhood, when a small doll was so easy to handle for small hands. I have been a collector and a seller of antique dolls for many years. I have found over the last few years that collectors have been gravitating towards the smaller dolls. It seems the number one factor is lack of space. Even though some may lack the detail of their bigger versions, small dolls have always been popular and were made by most of the main doll companies. The standard was very high and the voting was very close. Dear Editor Being a passionate porcelain doll lover, it took me quite a while to get my head around reborns. I’ve now seen them at plenty of shows, and got to hold and cuddle a few of them, and while I still prefer porcelain dolls, I’m now feeling a bit of an internal push to make my very own reborn baby. This issue I am concentrating more on some of the Australian sculptors and the gorgeous babies they are producing. I know I haven’t listed all the Australian sculptors here, and will be happy to show their babies if they contact me for the next issue. Alicia Toner is working on another baby called Mae Louise. At the time of writing this, the sculpting is not totally finished, with some work needed on the limbs, but she is such a cute baby I had to include her here. If I was a bear, I would most definitely love to live in this beautiful part of New South Wales. What with the beautiful green rolling hills, gorgeous flora and fauna, and lots of other bear friends to spend the days with, this hobby farm producing award-winning orchids on the Central Coast would make a picturesque home. Teddies Worldwide visitors were treated to two shows at once on March 18th to March 20th 2016…..The Bear Maker’s Marketplace & Teddy Bear Extravaganza. The Bear Makers Marketplace, a new show for this year was where bear makers and those wanting to try their hand at bearmaking found lots of wonderful fabrics, patterns and classes for inspiration. Over 225 bears were sold in the 5th annual Teddy Bear Extravaganza in which twelve Countries were represented.
