MATERIALS Light card Glue STEP ONE Copy the patterns onto light card (photocopy, scan or trace). STEP TWO Cut out and draw pieces over a sharp edge to break the grain of the card making it easier to curve. STEP THREE Curve jug body to the overlap edge and glue. Do the same with the pouring edge. STEP FOUR Glue bottom edge of jug and place onto a spare piece of card. Allow to set and cut around the bottom edge. STEP FIVE Glue pouring edge into top of jug body keeping seam edges aligned. Glue the handle to the seamed edge of jug body. FINAL STEP Paint and decorate in any style you wish. You can make other sizes by extending the patterns. Have fun! Nerida O’Callaghan believes she has always been a miniaturist but didn’t come to realise it until later in life. “Since childhood I have loved little things - replicas of the real life objects. My mother had Crack-a- Jack prizes and other miniatures from her own childhood and I cherished them and appreciated the skill used in making them. She also collected antiques, so I was surrounded by beautiful objects and learnt a lot about history,” Nerida recalls. “It wasn’t until a visit to my friend in Sacramento, California when I was searching for an unusual gift for my mother that I discovered a shop devoted to miniatures. MATERIALS Wine box, (this one will fit a 20cm doll) Small piece of balsa or similar wood Short piece of 6mm dowel 3 x A4 sized sheets of scrapbooking paper with appropriate pattern Small length of co-ordinating ribbon to cover dowel Small length of 0.9mm wire to string beads 12 assorted beads Mod Podge or similar glue Fan brush for applying glue Gloss lacquer METHOD STEP ONE Study your wine box and determine the layout for your carry case. The eagerly anticipated 2016 Annual Fair for the NSW Doll Collectors’ Club will be presented again at the popular venue, the Liverpool Catholic Club. The Fair’s success continues year after year, with Convenor Ann Murray looking forward to another bumper weekend on July 30-31. The Doll Collectors’ Club is proudly presenting the Fair for the thirty-fifth consecutive year. Early Fairs were mostly held at the Liverpool Whitlam Centre, with the present venue proving to be comfortable and convenient for traders and patrons. The Club’s annual fair is the chief source of income for the charity nominated by club members each year, and this year’s charity is Shake-it-up-Australia, established to promote and fund Parkinson’s disease research in Australia. It is interesting to look back over the years on many years of collecting antique dolls, and think of the huge variety that were made. Just in my own collection I’ve realised how many dolls there are with moulded bonnets or hair decorations. The most obvious and well-known are the dolls of Gebruder Heubach. Heubach specialised in character dolls of lifelike children and made more dolls with moulded hair than dolls with wigs, and more dolls with intaglio eyes than glass eyes. Heubach has always been my favourite maker, so I have more dolls by him than any other. He also made a wonderful variety of figurines of children and piano babies. He was known for his dolls with deeply sculpted hairstyles and quite a few had moulded bows and…

Nothing motivates and delights a reproduction doll maker more than the release of a new doll mould. When that mould is the only commercially available authentic mould taken from a Huret doll, the excitement is remarkable. Last October I was fortunate enough to attend the Doll Artisan Guild* International Convention in Chicago, where the Huret reproduction - a project, which had been many years in the making, was finally unveiled. Thanks to the collaboration between Louise Hedrick, well renowned antique doll expert, Mary Raleigh, D.A.G. Instructor and Doctor of Dollmaking Educator, and Sheryl Williams, D.A.G. Where to begin? Growing up in country New Zealand in the 1950s meant that a young girl had to learn homemaking skills and crafts. We did not have television so we were kept occupied by learning how to knit and sew. I loved dolls, and spent a lot of time making clothes for the dolls my mother gave me for Christmas and birthdays. My sister and I still have the ‘walky talky’ dolls that were given to us by our maternal grandmother in 1958, but the dolls we dressed the most were a beautiful blonde doll and a baby black doll and I still have them and their wardrobes.
