(“What’s in a Name? More Than You Think,” June 2021)
“What’s in a Name?” discusses words that sound like what they mean (e.g.: pop, murmur, whisper). I would like to point out that in English, Spanish, French, and, I suppose, Italian, many words and suffixes that denote the diminutive or feminine use the vowel sounds “i” or “ee”: little, mini, petite, teeny, skimpy, itsy bitsy, bit, pee wee, sissy, -ita, -ina. Even in animals, we have kitty, piggy, filly, chick. These words and suffixes do not sound like what they mean, but somehow, we associate that vowel with being small.
