Welcome to this year’s animago-issue! We are presenting all the nominees, winners and a handful of stills – but only a little bit about the event itself, which, as we go to print, has not happened yet, and it is bastardly difficult to predict the future, as you might know. If you don’t find it difficult, we either have a bridge to sell you or you have seen that joke coming a year off. But back to the issue in your hand: A few nominees and winners are only introduced very quickly – we will have larger stories in the coming year on those, and a few more in-depth making-ofs, going into all the interesting technical details – keep reading, if you are into that. One of the studios involved was Scanline, which we don’t have to introduce, we all know Scanline. We talked to Mohsen Mousavi about the show. DP: Just to clarify: On a scale of 1 to 10, how much fun is it to burn down King’s Landing and animate dragons? Mohsen Mousavi: 15! DP: How big was the team and much time did you have? DP: How did you get the idea for the story? Clémence Ottevaere: The original idea came from a story that was told by my grandmother. During the second world war, there was an exodus, and a lot of families left Dunkirk to protect themselves from the bombing raids. At this time, a family stopped by my family’s farm to ask for some food – in exchange for butter, this family gave my great-grandparents a huge oak cabinet, which is still in the living room of my grandparents. DP: And how did the team get together to make the movie happen? Morgane Ladjel: At Supin-focom, our teams are always made the same way, each year. DP: As a game trailer, this is obviously awesome: I hate zombies and scares, but I want to play that game immediately. How much of it is from within the game? Tomek Suwalski (Director): Obviously the trailer takes place and features some of the locations and characters that you can encounter in the game. Artyom, Anna and creatures are the main pillars, but the boy and his family are trailer proprietary, they are not featured in the game. The locations are similar, but we created them all from scratch. So, despite the possibility of walking into the metro tunnels in the game or being outside, you won’t find the exact same spots as in the trailer. DP: Could you at least use assets, and how did you manage those between…

DP: Obviously the first question: How much fun is it to work on one of the major icons of gaming history: Lara Croft? Jonathan Dahan (Producer): It was more of a humbling experience I’d say, like a dream come true that also comes with homework. We were given the mandate of completing the origin trilogy of one of the most recognizable protagonists / franchises in the industry. That’s a tall order! We knew we couldn’t mess it up, so we took it very seriously and tried to make the best game we could. The fun comes more in the day-to-day, I think. DP: How did you get involved in making a christmas commercial for Penny? Darren Macpherson: Our team at Glassworks Amsterdam had previously worked with the commissioning agency Serviceplan on spots for Capri-Sun and Torino. We managed to develop and maintain a strong relationship with the agency creatives, so they reacted very positively to the concept of mixed media approach. This in the end won the work, and as you’ve seen the idea came to life. DP: You mixed miniatures and CGI – why did you choose that approach? Wouldn’t it have been easier to make it full-CGI? DP: How did you get involved in making a movie from John Kelly’s book? Milovan Mladenovic: John Kelly is a dear friend of one of our partners from Light-stream Animation Studios (LSA). Crater Studio got involved soon after the initial creative steps were made. DP: While you were developing it, what was your design process? Milovan Mladenovic: The idea from the start was to stay true to the original book artwork. Of course some additional stylization and detailing were done following some modern trends in 3D animation. Anthropomorphic characteristics to both characters were carefully and thoughtfully added to convey the friendship and care for each other. DP: Frederic, what is your favorite font? Frederic Doazan: I’m sure you won’t believe me, but I’m not a typography specialist at all. So I will choose Gotham which is probably the font I’m using the most in my professional work. Maybe Bodoni as well. DP: Why did you tell the story via animated text and how did you get the idea for the setting? Frederic Doazan: For “Hurlevent”, I was inspired by visual poetry. Visual poetry is basically drawing with words and letters. Like the calligrams of Guillaume Apollinaire. I discovered some beautiful visual poetry paintings from an American artist called Hart Broudy. In his paintings, you can see some strange shapes saturated with words, like abstract creatures made with words. I was fascinated and I thought it could…

DP: When was the last time you went diving? And what got stuck on your flippers? Pascal Schelbli: When I got my diving license in 2013, I never thought that I would need it 5 years later for something like this. It all started with a picture of Honduras where you could see the surface of the sea covered with garbage and a drawing of me showing a Roche with a flip-flop flap. I showed these and other drawings to my class at the animation institute and the Roche won the race high and dry. I went on and developed several of these creature combinations. Ursprünglich in Maya verfügbar (als Retake-Tool für Golaem Crowd Simulationen im Jahr 2016), wurde Golaem Layout schnell von Artists als eigenständiges Tool eingesetzt, um einfache Populationsszenen schneller zu erstellen. Golaem 6 begrüßte diese neue Verwendung mit dem Bibliotheks-Toolset, welches es ermöglicht, animierte Figuren und Szenen in einer Bibliothek zu sammeln und zu importieren, um sie in jeder Aufnahme nur noch leicht (oder auch vollständig) zu verändern. Golaem 7, das in diesem Sommer veröffentlicht wurde, treibt das Konzept weiter: mit Haltungs- und Rigg-Layern, die es ermöglichen, einen Charakter manuell zu reanimieren, aber dennoch von den Leistungen des Golaem-Layouts und allen Smart Layern profitieren. Die Firma Reallusion aus dem Silicon Valley hat dieses Jahr Cartoon Animator 4 als Nachfolger für CrazyTalk Animator 3 herausgebracht (wir berichteten 2017). Auf der Webseite von Reallusion (www.reallusion.com) wird das Erscheinen der neuen Version als Quantensprung bezeichnet. CTA4 will ein „mächtiges 2D-Animationsstudio mit aufregenden neuen Funktionen“sein. Cartoon Animator 4 enthält nach wie vor keine Zeichenfunktionen, und so gibt es auch keine Unterstützung für Frame-by-Frame-Animationen. Cutout-Animationen, Bewegungs-Tweens und animiertes Verformen, auch von Bitmaps, sorgen im Cartoon Animator für Bewegung. Content muss in anderen Anwendungen erstellt oder gekauft werden. Entrauschen Bisher kam Neatvideo nicht gut mit Aufnahmen zurecht, in denen keine hinreichend große, uniforme Fläche ohne Bilddetails zu finden war. Die Klassifikation bei der automatischen Profilierung zeigt dann nur relativ niedrige Prozentsätze an, und die Ergebnisse erreichen nicht mehr die exzellente Rauschreduktion, die man sonst von Neatvideo erwarten darf. In unserem Test wurde ein Handy-Clip, der zugegebenermaßen in der Abenddämmerung und mit viel Bewegung als Härtetest aufgenommen wurde, von der Version 4 mangels passender Samples sogar in dieser Hinsicht verweigert. Das liegt vermutlich daran, dass hier die massive Kompression (oder die für Handys typische Anpassung der Bildrate bei Low-Light) konstante Bilddetails vortäuscht. In Version 5 wurden offensichtlich Anpassungen vorgenommen, denn die gleichen Bildbereiche werden hier noch als Rauschsamples akzeptiert. Many of our speakers will get more than just one slot this year, so visitors have the possibility to see their favorite speakers. DP: When I watched “Sicario 2”, it felt like regular, practical SFX. How long did you need to get to that point of realism? Alexandre Lafortune (VFX Supervisor): As the sole vendor on this movie, we produced 70 shots which featured various types of visual effects including muzzle flash, bullet impacts, full CG environments and matte paintings, and also military and civil vehicles to populate shots. We were brought in quite early in the production, with work beginning in January of 2017 and wrapping in September. I met with the director early on, but I was not on set for the whole shoot. Equipped with some extra fat rolls, an otherwise lovely zebra becomes the target of a cheetah attack. After a hopeless attempt to hide behind a tree, the overweight animal is caught. This sacrifice brought the team of the full CG animation spot a nomination in the category “Best Advertising Production” at this year’s animago. DP: How much fun is it to animate overweight zebras and how much control did you have over the fat rolls? Juan Pablo: It’s just as much fun as animating normal zebras. The animator’s rigs had no direct control over the fat rolls though. The bodymesh was classically weighted to the rig, with a fat simulation we made in Houdini. Muscles were linked to a modelled skeleton, which then deformed the skin. That way each fat…

DP: Why exactly that opera? Turbopascal: For this film we chose the famous song “Brindisi” from Verdi’s “La Traviata”. Indeed, this music, which begins with a duo that is gradually joined by choirs, speaks of love and joy of life, emphasizing the irony of the ending. This was important for us when choosing the music because it contains an exchange between several characters as well as a progressive increase in power. DP: How did you get the idea for that movie and how many iterations did it take to decide which fish should be in what role? Turbopascal: The idea came to us when the four of us were around a table. Imagine you are in Lisbon. You take the scenic route, feast your eyes on the sites, take a couple of pictures, and are generally relaxed and happy – and suddenly all hell breaks loose. DP: What made you tell the story of a unibrowed baby and a very prepared grandmother being saved by a couple of German tourists in Lisbon? Otalia Caussé: Above all, I wanted to realize a comedy. The goal was to make the viewers laugh and to tell a simple but touching story. Mit der ZBrush-Version 2019 hat der Preview-Renderer ein sehr umfangreiches Update erhalten. Es handelt sich um die nahezu endlosen Kombinationsmöglichkeiten der neuen NPR-Filter (non-photo-realistic Filters). Für wen sind diese gedacht? Für alle, die ihre Skulpturen und Modelle in einem handgezeichneten 2D-Stil sehen wollen oder auf schnelle Weise einen abgefahrenen Grafik-Stil entwickeln möchten. Verwendung könnte dies unter anderem in Postern, Comics, Verpackungs-Artwork finden, oder man benutzt sie einfach als Inspiration für einen neuen Designentwurf. Was sind die Vorteile im Gegensatz zu Photoshop oder anderen 2D-Programmen? Da die NPR-Filter mit 3D-Daten arbeiten, können einige Effekte erzielt werden, die in einem klassischen 2D-Editor wie Photoshop nur schwer umsetzbar wären. Im Folgenden geht es um die kostenlose Version DaVinci Resolve 16, nicht die Studio-Version, die im Audiobereich zusätzlich über mehr proprietäre Fairlight-Audioeffekte verfügt sowie das Mischen und Mastern in 3D-Audio-Formaten wie etwa Dolby Atmos, Auro 3D, MPEG-H oder SMPTE ST 2098 erlaubt und darüber hinaus die DaVinci Neural Engine Features sowie Multi-User-Kollaboration, stereoskopische 3D-Tools, zahlreiche ResolveFX, HDR-Grading als auch Effekte für Filmkörnung, Weichzeichnung oder Nebel bietet. Auf der anderen Seite gibt es in Clarisse praktisch keine Polygongrenze. Das Arbeiten im 3D-View von Clarisse ist die reine Freude, da auch Arrangements mit mehreren Milliarden Polygonen, Partikeln und Voxeln flüssig angezeigt werden. Die neu hinzugekommene Unterstützung von Nvidias RTX-Karten beschleunigt diesen Vorgang nochmals und lässt die 3D-Klassiker in dieser Hinsicht extrem blass aussehen. Einen GPU-Renderer wird es aber wohl auf absehbare Zeit nicht geben. Realfow Fluids und Clarisse Das Fehlen von Tools zur Objekterzeugung in Clarisse bedeutet, dass (fast) alle Daten als Assets importiert werden müssen. Der Rundgang entstand aus einer Plakat-Illustration zum gleichen Thema, die wir für die Kinderseite angefertigt hatten. Sie zeigt eine Landschaft mit der Institution „Europäischer Rat“als Tisch in der Mitte mit den anderen sechs Institutionen als Gebäuden drum herum – ihren Funktionen entsprechend gestaltet als symbolische Arena, Registrierkasse, Ordnersammlung etc. Und so entstand der Gedanke, in dieses Plakat einzutauchen und die Gebäude als Rundgang virtuell zu betreten, um Informationen zur EU zu sammeln – wie bei einer Schnitzeljagd. Zeichnen oder 3D oder beides? Hierfür mussten also neu zu gestaltende Innenleben der abgebildeten Orte erstellt werden, die mittels einer Panorama-Tour-Software mit Hotspots zum Aufrufen von Infos zu einem 360-Grad-Rundgang durch alle sieben Räume verbunden wurden. DP: “Fantastic Beasts” had all kinds of VFX, FX, sim, explosions, creatures, characters and tricky CGI stuff that is possible: How do you keep track of that huge amount of assets? Arnaud Brisebois (VFX Supervisor): We use Shotgun. In a nutshell, SG is an internal publish and review software where every single task, time log, shot or asset version and published file – in fact everything in the company – is filed and tracked either at company or show level. Every single artist version, be it modeling, rigging, textures, shading, CFX, FX, matchmove, layout, animation, lighting or comp, is posted on SG, where show or specialty supervisors review them, enter written feedback for artists and track task progress status. Eric Couzian (Creative Director): In “Ghost Recon: Breakpoint”, we wanted the players to be in the boots of the Ghosts, lost behind enemy lines in a hostile and mysterious open world. To achieve that and building on the foundations of “Ghost Recon: Wildlands”, the team went to great lengths to create the new world of Aurora. Building a brand new, fictional world for the very first time in a “Ghost Recon” game allowed the team to really push their creativity. DP: Just to satisfy my curiosity: Did the ape at least know he reached 700 mph in the final seconds? Team 400mph: Maybe. No matter how fast he goes, to him it will always feel like he hasn’t managed to exceed 400 mph. DP: Considering the basic story line: How did you get the idea for that movie? Team 400mph: The story was inspired by the attempts to break the sound barrier in the 1950s. The pilots at that time were taking incredible risks to beat this record. DP: You produced (and rendered) the twelfth open movie. How has the reception of “Spring” been so far? Francesco Siddi: With over 3 million views online and several international awards, I think the reception was fantastic. DP: Producing everything in one software, which, at the time, was an early alpha version: What additional tools did you use for shot-tracking, producing and so forth? Francesco Siddi: Our core tech stack outside of Blender consists of Attract (shot and production management), Flamenco (render management) and SVN (version control). Mostly in solo work, the Cologne-based artist has set himself a lot of goals with his image film project. The resulting video represents the current image film of the menswear label GUNEE Homme. The main objective of the clip was to show the production and creative process of its “Permanent Collection” (published in early 2019) in an abstract way. DP: The video looks great, but for those who never heard of GUNEE Homme before: what is it? Thomas Gugel: Thank you. GUNEE Homme itself was founded in 2014 and is a rather high-priced brand. They mainly combine hand-drawn illustrations and patterns with high-quality selected fabrics. These are elaborately printed or embroidered and used to make shirts, jackets or ties, for example. So wurde in 2018 bereits Palladio veröffentlicht, ein CityEngine-Plug-in für SideFX Houdini. Ähnlich zu Palladio erlaubt Serlio die Verlagerung der Gebäudemodell-Generierung von CityEngine nach Maya. Im Wesentlichen hat dies den Vorteil, dass weniger Export-Import-Schritte notwendig sind, wenn auf einem Gebäudemodell iteriert wird (z.B. Anpassung der CityEngine-Regel-Attribute). Ein Vorteil von Serlio ist, dass nur die Input-Geometrie (z.B. Parzellen) importiert werden müssen und nicht die volle Modellgeometrie. Dies bedeutet kleinere und weniger komplexe Dateien (was ja immer etwas Gutes ist). Die FBX-Experten unter uns wissen, wie fummelig die Material-Imports sein können (z.B. duplizierte Materialien bei mehrfachem Import), und daher wird es eine erfreuliche Nachricht für euch sein, dass Serlio direkt die nativen Maya-Materialien erzeugt. Nachdem wir – Korrektur: nicht wir, ich (eine persönliche Erfahrung – für euch ist es vielleicht anders) ein paar Tage mit akuten Gelenkschmerzen verbracht habe, machte es irgendwann klick. Für das Redesign von „PopXport“in 2018 sollte ein komplett neues Sendungsdesign entwickelt werden, d.h. das gesamte On-air-Konzept inklusive Logo, Sound Design, Onlinepräsenz als auch das Studiodesign waren davon betroffen. Das Herzstück sollte aber das Opening bilden. Storyboard Von Anfang an gab es die Vorgabe einen frischen, lebendigen und individuellen Look zu entwickeln. Das klingt erst mal gut, macht den Anfang aber nicht einfacher. Bei den ersten Entwürfen wurde zunächst ausschließlich mit Musikinstrumenten und Audiogeräten experimentiert. Schnell war klar dass hierbei die menschliche Komponente zu kurz kam. Einen Entwicklungsschritt weiter wurden Tänzer und Musiker mit Instrumenten kombiniert. Die Hauptfiguren sollten mit Plattenspielern und Tonbandgeräten auf eine unkonventionelle Art und Weise interagieren. Primatte 6 lässt sich parallel zu der Vorversion installieren und funktioniert auch in Premiere. Wie schon in der Vorversion ist Primatte spezialisiert auf schwieriges Key-Material wie Transparenzen und Haar-Details. Bei einen Click auf „Auto Define Key“wird der Hintergrund des Bildes analysiert und automatisch die optimale Keyfarbe eingestellt. Der Hersteller verspricht dreimal schnelleres Rendern mit GPU-Unterstützung. Ich konnte allerdings beim Rendering keine großen Unterschiede feststellen, was aber auch an den nicht ganz identischen Settings oder der schon etwas betagten Grafikkarte liegen kann. Den größten Unterschied macht die sogenannte Core Matte. Damit lässt sich das Innere des Keys komplett opak machen, während der äußere Key die feinen Details erhält. Praktisch zwei Keys in einem. Um dem auf den Grund zu gehen, lohnt es sich, erst einmal die klassische Open-Source-Entwicklung unter die Lupe zu nehmen. Einen Programmierer von Open-Source-Software stellt man sich gemeinhin als jemanden vor, der ein bestimmtes Stück Software haben will, dieses umsetzt und die Ergebnisse mit der ganzen Welt teilt, und zwar ohne dafür Geld zu verlangen. Zu dieser Spezies könnte man mich zählen, da ich auch schon ein paar Kleinigkeiten zu Blender beigetragen habe, eben weil ich kleine Features benötigte oder Fehler lieber gleich selbst behoben habe. Beim Hochfahren des neuen Media Composers fällt zu allererst auf, dass die Standardformate und -auflösungen wie gewohnt im Projektfenster auswählbar sind. Diese wurden aber nun um einige zusätzliche hochauflösende Projektformate erweitert, die eine Bearbeitung in Avid bis zu 16 K und 120 fps ermöglichen sollen. Das Custom-Format ist dennoch erhalten geblieben. Auch im Bereich des Farbraums hat sich was getan. ACES ist nun integriert worden. Dabei ist ACES als Working Colorspace wie auch als Output Colorspace anwählbar sowie die ACES-Version. Beim Öffnen eines Projekts fällt dann sofort das überarbeitete User Interface ins Auge. Eine Oberfläche, die im neuen designerischen Gewand daherkommt und mit neuartigen Panels ausgestattet ist.
