OEM NEWS GM’S SEMICONDUCTOR CHIP SOLUTION Fresh on the heels of news that it plans to pour millions into further internal combustion engine development, GM is investing in producing semiconductor chips on U.S. soil. The automaker has entered into a long-term agreement with GlobalFoundries, a company that will manufacture for GM’s key chip suppliers at its advanced semiconductor facility in Malta, New York. The move brings a highly critical process in the production of automobiles to the U.S. With the agreement, chips will be produced in higher volumes, but are also expected to offer improved quality and predictability over current, overseas-sourced units. If we’ve learned anything from the relentless push for EV technology, it’s that diesel tow trucks aren’t going to be out of work anytime soon. Reports indicate this Tesla Pepsi truck ran out of charge west bound on I-80 and was forced to call in a tow. It’s unclear whether or not the 53-foot trailer it was tethered to was loaded with product or not, or if the EV semitruck was only out on a test run. Regardless, it didn’t make it to its destination. PSA: 2021 and older fifth-gen Ram owners, don’t let your dealer reflash your truck! Tuned fifth-gen trucks receiving factory ECM updates have reported being locked out, with no way back in. Unfortunately, this likely means that having the CP4.2 to CP3 high-pressure fuel pump recall performed on a ’19-’21 truck will mean it gets treated to the reflash. This comes on the heels of the EPA pushing OEM’s to lock down their ECM’s in order to keep aftermarket calibrators out. The best advice? Ask your dealer not to connect or reflash your ECM while in their care. There is no way back in if they update your truck’s engine control module—at least for now.
