Skygarden House, as you might expect, gets its name from a patio located on the top floor that sits snug as a motorcycle sidecar off the master bedroom. The space is finished with ash decking and tufts of plants that pop from a recessed planter, and topped by a dreamy canopy from nearby trees. Fifteen years ago, our sister magazine Azure identified a growing appetite in Toronto for the sort of furniture it featured on its glossy pages. Our publisher regularly fielded queries, and not just from aficionados. “Where,” for example, “in Toronto, can I get a modern bed?” Designlines was launched in 2001 to answer those questions. The biannual magazine started pocket-sized – take us shopping with you! We mapped out where to find German shelving, Italian sofas and Scandinavian silverware. Our first issue featured 62 stores: back then, Kiosk was tucked away on Dupont Street and Club Monaco’s now-defunct lifestyle store, Caban, was “it.” Much has changed. The float-home community moored at the base of the Scarborough Bluffs stirs the same pinch-me feeling as its majestic setting. Inspired by similar settlements in Seattle and the San Francisco Bay Area, the buoyant abodes were constructed on a dry dock, then towed over from Cherry Beach by a now-defunct developer back in 2000. Each one is built atop a pier-grade concrete barge and tethered to a dock that extends from the shoreline at Bluffers Park Marina – combining the central location of a condo with the idyllic setting of a cottage.
