When it comes to maintaining healthy white-tailed deer populations, state agencies have few tools in their arsenal for dealing with afflictions like chronic wasting disease and epizootic hemorrhagic disease. Although each of these diseases have been studied for more than 50 years, state wildlife agencies have been stymied – unable to develop any effective vaccines. Even if a vaccine could be developed, how could state officials effectively deliver it to free-ranging whitetails? Michigan is the first state in the country tackling the ever-anticipated vaccine delivery question. For nearly 50 years, deer hunters and cattle farmers in the Great Lakes State have been plagued by bovine tuberculosis, or bTB, a pernicious disease that not only kills deer but has repeatedly threatened the worldwide beef industry. A 9-year-old doe that had a tennis ball stuck in its mouth for weeks near Marquette was eventually hit and killed by a vehicle on County Road 480 on July 19 before the DNR could do anything to help the animal. Harvey resident Susan Andary noticed the doe with the tennis ball in her mouth on June 30 and photographed the deer. “She must have thought it (the tennis ball) was an apple and bit into it,” Andary said. “The ball is stuck on her bottom teeth.” The foreign object prevented the doe from eating properly, causing her to lose weight while nursing a fawn. Concerned about the deer’s welfare, Andary contacted the DNR for assistance. “They wanted to use a dart gun to put the deer down temporarily, so…

Occasionally, adult bucks turn up with a normal 4- or 5-point antler on one side and a spike or forked antler on the other side. This is usually due to what is called the contralateral effect that results from a previous injury. That may be the cause in some cases, but not always. A 2-year-old Michigan buck that has been a regular visitor to the rural Delta County residence of Dave Wellman this summer is a perfect example. “I’ve got this buck hanging around my yard,” Dave told me. “It looked like he was going to be a nice 8-pointer. Then one day he showed up and his right antler was gone. It was snapped off at the base. I have no idea how he lost that antler.” It was…
