Deer & Deer Hunting is written and edited for serious, year-round hunting enthusiasts, focusing on hunting techniques, deer biology and behavior, deer management, habitat requirements, the natural history of deer and hunting ethics
The string is back, and soon the 18-inch, fletched shaft is on its way. The broadhead hits its mark, and the deer doesn’t go far before falling. It sounds like another successful bowhunt is in the books! Yeah, I gave it away with the arrow length. Some will call it a bolt, and everyone knows this success story was that of a crossbow hunter. This is sure to spark some debate, but I’d say it’s safe to proclaim in 2024 that the crossbow is officially a legitimate bowhunting tool. Need some proof? You needn’t look any further than the fact that 32 states now allow crossbow usage during regular archery seasons. WHERE ARE THEY LEGAL? Of the 17 states that severely restrict crossbow use, only one — Iowa — can…

When it comes to news and information, the Internet can be a blessing or a curse. Stories go viral in an instant, regardless of whether they contain any modicum of truth. One reason a story goes viral quickly is that it plays on readers’ emotions, particularly when it’s presented as research-based content. For hunters, wildlife biologists or anyone who eats venison, few topics stoke anxiety and fear more than new research that suggests humans can contract chronic wasting disease from deer and other ungulates. A story recently claimed two men had likely contracted a neurological disease after eating tainted meat. “TWO HUNTERS BECOME FIRST AMERICANS TO DIE FROM ZOMBIE DEER DISEASE AFTER EATING INFECTED VENISON” (FALSE CLAIM) The story immediately went viral, leading to a plethora of similar stories from…
Cervids (members of the deer family) living in open country, such as elk and mule deer, rely heavily upon visual displays and vocalizations when communicating information of social significance. In contrast, forestdwelling white-tailed deer more commonly use glandular secretions and scent-marking, especially in conjunction with antler rubs and ground scrapes, commonly referred to as signposts. Scent marking and signpost communication is especially effective in dense forest cover, because chemical signals left on objects in the environment remain functional for lengthy periods in the maker’s absence. Typically, especially during the rut, mature bucks make most signposts to advertise their presence. Young males and females are the primary “readers.” My observations, using fake antler rubs and mock ground scrapes, have revealed that visual attractiveness is also important in determining deer response to…
Inever say anything — and I try to just smile and nod — when I hear hunting friends and acquaintances make statements like these as the whitetail bow season kicks off. It’s so warm now, I think I’ll wait until it cools down a little bit to hunt. No use getting too excited. Oh, I can’t stand the mosquitos and other bugs. Need some frosts to knock them back. Speaking of which, wouldn’t hurt to get some of that vegetation knocked back, too. Sure is thick this year. Oh, I like to wait for the rut. That’s when the action gets good anyway. I live for the rut. For those counts, as well as all the other related excuses hunters state for sitting out the season’s first week or even…
With throttle cranked, the hill that once took your breath away eats its own dust. The silence of the e-bike doesn’t fill the air; at least, not like that old ATV used to. And what about that entry and exit route ground scent you didn’t lay down? Yeah, that just might be best of all. E-bikes are all about low-impact hunting. Without question, there are many reasons to use an e-bike, but the big question — is it right for you? And if so, which one is best? E-BIKES FOR DEER HUNTING E-bikes are beneficial for numerous reasons. These make for excellent assets when in the field pursuing whitetails and other game. It doesn’t take much brainstorming to think of the reasons deer hunters should buy an e-bike. E-bikes make…
