There are opportunists, and then there are true visionaries. Alabama’s Ray Scott was both, but he definitely leaned toward the latter. As an opportunist, Mr. Scott became the starting quarterback for his YMCA football team in 1947 because he secured a sponsorship that was used to buy uniforms and equipment. It didn’t matter that his childhood buddy Bart Starr was also on the team. Starr had to play offensive guard for the time being. He used that acumen throughout his life to score win after win. One of the biggest came in the late 1960s when Mr. Scott single-handedly introduced the concept of tournament bass fishing to the American public. Today it is a $125 billion-a-year business that employs more than 800,000 Americans. It continued in the early 1980s when…

Few things are as fun as putting a new hunting rifle into your rotation. Close to it, however, is getting all the accessories and gear that go along with that purchase. Whether your rifle is fresh off the shelf or an old companion in need of a facelift, a new riflescope is at the top of the list when you start to build out your new rig. Dozens of articles exist on what features matter and how to choose the right scope for the job you are doing. I know because I’ve written more than a few of them. There is one thing that we tend to leave out of those articles, though: how to select the right reticle for the job. Talking to people about reticles over the last…

Hunting always seems to be evolving, in particular the weapons used to hunt game. Prior to 1966, longbows were all the rage, but that year things changed when Holles Wilbur Allen applied for the first compound bow patent. By 1974, eight companies were manufacturing compound bows and more would soon follow. By the early 1980s, as more states allowed their use during archery seasons, the compound had become the predominant hunting bow and was largely responsible for elevating bowhunting to its current popularity. In 1985 Tony Knight introduced the MK-85, the first modern inline muzzleloader. Due to its simple, user-friendly design, accuracy and reliability, the inline concept elevated the interest in hunting with muzzleloaders to new heights. Throughout the 1980s and early '90s, inlines continued to be the hottest ticket…
