I have a bad short-term memory. I forget details about appointments and conversations and a lot of other day-to-day stuff. Whether bucks have a desire to show friendship toward other bucks is open to debate. Certainly their affection is far different from that of does. Any bonding or friendship a buck shows toward another buck or group of bucks is confined to season. It is also based on the hierarchy of the bachelor group a given buck is a part of. In late winter and during the summer months when antlers are growing, several bucks will often form a bachelor group. During this time older bucks might groom each other, but usually such behavior is confined to younger bucks grooming with older ones or vise versa. It might be surprising to many that nowhere in this article have we mentioned hinge-cutting. Despite its popularity with many in the hunting world, few wildlife biologists or foresters are major proponents of the practice. Sure, it does provide good cover for deer to bed in, as well as some food. However, the forage provided by a treetop on the ground is much lower quality than many of the other plants we could be providing for deer using proper forest management. Also, hinge-cutting just drops the canopy lower, continuing to shade out higher quality forbs and vines preferred by deer. In many cultures, the heart, liver, kidneys and even lungs are the first things on an animal to be extracted from the carcass and eaten. On a recent trip to Africa, our skinners carefully took the heart, lungs, kidneys and other precious organs and tied them together in a bundle then hung them in the shade of a tree to air dry. The protein and iron-rich organs were considered a delicacy and were carefully guarded for the skinning crew to cook into a unique stew. Nothing went to waste, and when asked about what locals preferred to eat, all agreed it was the organ stew. Offal has different meanings to different people and cultures. Ultimately, your whitetail bow should feel good to you; a bow that sits up straight at full draw without torque-inducing manipulation, including a comfortable grip allowing a lose, cradling grip, and a cam system promoting planting a pin on target and pulling straight into your anchor point slowly and smoothly (this can also be a factor of draw weight, as I normally drop draw weight 10 pounds before cold whitetail seasons) without struggling or dislodging the arrow from the rest, and especially free of attention-grabbing movement. Despite my acrophobia there does exist a tree I climb without complaint. It’s a beast of a tree, a towering hemlock in which I constructed a treestand more than two decades ago. My stands are strictly DIY, a self-design allowing me to sidestep those ghastly tiny aluminum jobs that I cannot believe humans willingly stand up on. Mine is a trustworthy design, all comprised of rugged treated lumber. Two vertical supports are leveled and lagged securely onto opposite sides of a tree and tied together by a rigid cross piece screwed down into precisely measured notches to forbid horizontal shifting. I was a late arrival to the AR scene. For years I felt the entire gun-lobbying apparatus was collectively shoving them down our throats to make a political point, and I have never been one to wear politics on my sleeve. Interestingly, it was high-volume varmint shooting (more pointedly, writing a book on the subject) that changed my view.
