Royal Tokaji was one of the very first to benefit from international investment. Initial vintages of that decade were not exceptional, but ideal conditions in 1993 allowed new producers to make Tokaji of high quality. Although vintages of the early 1990s have not aged particularly well, 1993 has stood the test of time. Vintage report TUSCANY: BOLGHERI 2017 In southern Europe it was the year of a heatwave so severe that it was dubbed Lucifer. Yet experience and canny timing in the vineyards meant careful producers made good wines. TASTING NOTES DECODED Chalky The term chalky is usually applied to white wines with high acidity from cool-climate terroirs with stony soils – including Chardonnay wines from Chablis and Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre – and falls into the mineral category, along with notes of flint and slate. English winery Rathfinny has offered en primeur-style a portion of its Blanc de Noirs and Blanc de Blancs brut Sussex sparkling wines from the eagerly anticipated 2018 vintage. Starting from 20 October, customers of the Rathfinny Reserved programme must buy a minimum of four cases, containing either 6x75cl bottles or 3x150cl magnums, priced at £26 per bottle and £54 per magnum in bond – for delivery in summer 2022.
