IVAN Gil-Ortega, the recently appointed seventh Artistic Director of Queensland Ballet, had only been in the country for five days (and on the job for three) when I caught up with him at the company’s headquarters. Spanish-born, fluent in five languages, and with an impressive 25 years industry experience behind him, including as principal dancer, assistant director, artistic consultant, stager, and coach, all within multiple international ballet companies, Gil-Ortego seems the perfect pick to steer the company beyond this, its 65th year.
Unsurprisingly, given his background, Gil-Ortego always had hopes of an artistic directorship, originally applying for the QB position in 2023, and then putting his hand up again late last year when the appointment of Leanne Benjamin didn’t go to plan.
