BENEDICTE Bemet, the featured artist in this issue, knew she wanted to dance from the time she was a toddler. It is a common story among dancers – their passion envelopes them from an early age. Many of the graduates interviewed in this issue make the same comment about the certainty of their goal. It’s a gamble fixing on a dance career so early. One can’t accurately predict how the body will develop and how much talent a person has. Fortunately, dance training can lead to many other opportunities that still satisfy the calling – it isn’t just about performance. There are many other associated careers. A number of musicals is starting up in the forthcoming months. One is Grease, starring Annalise Hall and Joseph Spanti and choreographed by Broadway's Eric Giancola. Patty Newton, Marcia Hines and Jay Laga'aia are also in the cast. The show opens at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Melbourne, on December 31 and moves to the Capitol Theatre, Sydney, in March, 2024. What is your best memory of your full-time dance studies? Practically being my second home growing up, I have nothing but fond memories of my time at Amanda Bollinger Dance Academy (ABDA). INSTEP IN a major world premiere, the West Australian Ballet will present a new work on the life and art of the legendary Dutch post-impressionist artist Vincent Van Gogh. INSTEP RAEWYN Hill, Co3's artistic director, has revealed that her next mainstage production will be Archives of the Invisible, inspired by the Dante's Divine Comedy. The late medieval poet Dante Alighieri is recognised as the father of Italian language and by Pope Francis as the poet of hope. With dramaturg Richard Longbottom, and a new musical score, Hill will be reinterpreting the cantos of Dante’s masterwork for the appreciation of today's audiences. OVER two weekends in August, Sydney Dance Company, in partnership with the Neilson Foundation, will present INDance, a platform for independent choreographers and creatives.
