The klopse teams of Section 1 showed up at Athlone Stadium, greeted by the largest crowd ever to watch them perform their final items for the season. People queued outside for close to four hours. Victorious The Nazeem Benjamin Heritage Cup was held on Sunday night at the Cape Town City Hall where seven choirs competed, but it was the crowd favourite Tjommies who walked away victorious. Items rendered on the night were Junior Solo, Senior Solo, Comic song, Combine Chorus and the Nederlands Lied. I watched and admired the troupes, and applaud the board members for the way they kept things together and how they respected the craft. Other teams who showcased their talents during the finale of the competition on Sunday were Broadways Studente, Protea Sporting club, Sewende Laan, Riverside Roses, Starlites, Golden Notes and Tjommies. ‘Scrap head boy/girl titles’

CALLS to have the terms head boy and head girl formally scrapped at schools have become a hot topic among members of the LGBTQ+ community. This comes after the Foundation for Education and Social Justice Africa described the term as “discriminatory [and] that does not promote an inclusive culture”. Hendrick Makaneta, an education activist and director at the foundation, says the terms in all probability make it difficult for transgender learners to take part in leadership structures. “There are learners who do not identify with the male or female gender and some who are biologically born a boy who prefer to be called a girl and vice versa,” he explains.
