It’s been six long decades since a rider from the northeast of England won races at cycling’s highest level. Back then, it was the late, great Tommy Simpson, who was born in Haswell, 25 miles north of Brennan’s hometown, Darlington. There have been a few other notable riders from the region – Paul Curran, Sid Barras, and the Tanfield brothers, Charlie and Harry – but never a superstar.
