Sparsely-inhabited Dumfries & Galloway is a land of quiet lanes through gentle countryside of modest lochs, green hills, and farms: arable, dairy, and these days, wind. Climbs are few but long; shallow downhills are many. Cafes and pubs are few, too – take supplies – but friendly, easily-accessed Dumfries (unavoidably the home of Robert Burns) is a great base and a delightful find.
