Giant says its Stance E+ 2 is aimed at beginner or intermediate trail riders, and it features the second most powerful motor in Giant’s own-brand range of e-bike motors, the SyncDrive Sport. The frame geometry is aimed to give predictable and comfortable riding rather than being designed for adrenaline-inducing speed. Let’s start with the motor itself: it boasts 70Nm torque and up to 360% assist – that’s only a shade below the highest-performing motors from the likes of Bosch, Shimano and Yamaha (Giant mid drive motors are in fact based on Yamaha motors but have their own software specifications). Forme’s Lathkill is an out-and-out performance-oriented full-suspension electric mountain bike with an apt name – Lathkill is a dale in the Peak District National Park, where the Forme team are based. While the price might look steep, it is actually pretty reasonable for the high-end spec you get right out of the box. Most notable is the sophisticated four-bar Horst link style rear suspension, preferred over more basic rear-suspension setups for the subtler performance it gives, which should translate to closer control during trail riding. Rolling on 10-inch air filled tyres, which come pre-equipped with puncture protection sealant, Pure’s Air Go fills the space at the entry level of the brand’s portfolio. As such it is a little heavier than the pricier Air and Air Pro, which retail at £449 and £599, respectively. LIME Lime originally came to the UK with its electric bike share scheme, as detailed in the feature on electric bike hire in Cycling Electric’s first issue. Where they’re deployed in London those electric bikes have racked up north of two million rides, so there is a good chance the app to access the scooters may already be on your mobile. The electric scooters were initially introduced in Milton Keynes, where 500 units were deployed at a hire cost of £1 plus 20p per minute (Lime has also announced a further rollout in London). I am lucky enough to have no less than three Cannondales parked in my garage. Bristol Bicycles’ back story is in many ways typical of the bike world. Eovolt may be a new name on the e-bike market but with the City X, the French designer has created an extremely well-thought-out assisted bicycle that lives up to its urban moniker. The whole point of a folding bike is that it should be easily transported, and that means it needs to be as light as possible so that you can easily carry it onto a train or put it in the boot of a car when folded. With the Vibe H10 EQ, Spanish bike brand Orbea has managed to do something that few other e-bike makers have – create a bike with incredibly clean lines. As bike technology has progressed, bikes have become increasingly cluttered with cables for gears, hoses for brakes and wires for the electric assistance, but on the Vibe H10 EQ Orbea has cleverly managed to conceal them all. All of the necessary controls are cleanly routed through the handlebars into the handlebar stem and then through the frame. In late 2020 Canyon benefited from a significant cash injection from investors and with it came part of the team that designed Apple’s iPod. While that design savvy is unlikely to have yet got into full flow, the Torque:ON’s finely crafted chassis is still a delightful sight to behold. This Australian e-mobility label will be bringing its bicycles back to the UK later this year, but for the time being its electric scooters are the focal point. The Glide is the latest model, joining the E4 and E4 Plus detailed in our last issue, priced at the entry level of Reid’s electric scooter catalogue. Rock and roll Bern Hudson MIPS helmet While adding strength to brake pads and chains is important for the electric bike experience, you can also pick up helmets that carry additional weight in their certification with testing taking into account the probable forces of a crash involving an e-bike. Available to order in advance of an expected December 2021 delivery, Cairn’s latest e-bike is built to be a workhorse companion across a variety of terrain. The UK manufacturer badges it “gravduro”, which indicates it’s somewhere between a gravel and an enduro bike. Beyond that, there are two options to fine-tune the bike to your riding preference: a flat bar option that’s well suited to off-piste adventure, and a drop bar iteration that will serve the adventurer who seeks versatility and ground-covering capability. “There is a need for innovation to make e-bikes more comfortable and convenient for year around cycling,” says Morten Rynning, co-founder of Norway’s CityQ – and introducing comfort and convenience to e-bikes is exactly what the CityQ does. Sleek, light and high-tech. Those three words embody a new genre of city e-bikes developed in northern continental Europe, and Belgium’s Cowboy is one of the leading examples of the genre. The average traffic speed in central London is now languishing at around 7mph, just a few notches faster than the average walking speed (3-4mph). Halfords’ own brand, Carrera, is one of the UK’s biggest-selling bike labels and is now rolling out an electric scooter line, starting with this sub-£400 models that will give you a range of 18 miles per charge. Designed and engineered at ARCC’s Cambridgeshire headquarters, the highly customisable Rosemont is a bike built for comfort. The first thing you may notice is that the battery is housed externally, on a head tube-mounted bracket; energy trickles down from here to a front hub motor via waterproof cabling. Once upon a time bicycles had frames made up of a collection of tubes. They were simple to make and the design worked perfectly. However, the growth of e-bikes has caused a sea change in bicycle design. Bike designers now have to find space for the electric motor and accompanying battery pack, and a simple tubular steel frame just doesn’t cut the mustard.
