My favourite gaming genre is the immersive sim. Games such as Thief, Deus Ex, System Shock and Dishonored all rank highly in my personal greatest hits. I like games that let me solve problems in creative ways, where systems can interact and produce unexpected results. Since the days of Ultima Underworld, the immersive sim has been the ultimate expression of this interaction, and the genre commands a lot of respect within the industry.
In terms of the wider gaming audience, however, immersive sims have never seen the popularity of, say, Minecraft or Fortnite. I’ve often wondered why, and I think it comes down to a question of tone.
