While we wait for its equivalent B450 counterpart to land, we’re taking a look at an even cheaper Asus board – the Prime B450-Plus Gaming. Costing just under £100, it goes head to head with the ASRock Fatal1ty B450 Gaming K4 (see p45) and, at first glance, the two boards appear similar. However, the Prime B450-Plus’ physical features are a little lacking compared with the ASRock board. It first appears to be a B450 Tomahawk with a few centimetres lopped off the bottom. However, with a bit of Googling you’ll find homebrew instructions for making it work with various other ISPs, or for setting it up as a wireless access point. That could be a worthwhile upgrade on whatever you’re using now. Although the Smart Hub’s antennae are all internal, there’s seven of them, with a claimed maximum 5GHz speed of 1,733Mb/sec, and it’s highly effective at close and medium range, giving us a solid 25MB/sec connection in the living room and a creditable 21MB/sec in the bedroom. Since May, the company has been rolling out a new hub that aims to improve matters. And we have to say, we can’t fault the new hub for speed. Of course, the dies were essentially already in place to spring from 16 cores to 32 cores under the huge heatspreader, but the Zen+ architecture and its 12nm manufacturing process has lowered power consumption and allowed higher frequencies too. Despite having 32 cores and 64 threads, the Threadripper 2990WX can reach a peak boost speed of 4.2GHz and multi-threaded workloads will see an all-core frequency of at least 3GHz. AGPtek Cassette to MP3 Recorder/ £22.99 inc VAT The AGPtek is a cassette to MP3 converter styled like a classic Walkman. The device is USB or battery powered and doesn’t need to connect to a PC, so there’s no need for drivers or other software. Recorded tracks are outputted via USB, so the preferred storage method is a flash drive. The device is smart enough to handle tasks such as dividing individual songs into individual files, although it can be slightly confused by songs with long silences in them. The sound quality is good, with no discernible drop in quality, albeit with the proviso that cassettes don’t offer the best-quality sound from the start. How we test AMD’s cheaper B450 chipset has finally landed, meaning there are now some more affordable options when it comes to building a Ryzen PC. Choice is a little limited at the moment, so we’ve added a micro-ATX board among the ATX options to make up the numbers, but scored it on its own merits rather than including it in our usual calculations compared to the rest of the line-up. You get a full I/O panel shroud covering all those ugly ports and it’s equipped with RGB lighting too. How we test To test the wireless performance of each of the routers in this month’s Labs test, I set up each one in my own home – a 1930s townhouse in London with thick walls and plenty of interference from electrical appliances and neighbours’ wireless networks – and installed the latest firmware. Hacking simulation is one of the PC’s most niche but most treasured genres. It’s also one of the most developmentally complicated. To make a game about hacking, not only do you need to provide the appropriate hacking tools to the player, but you also need to create virtual computers and networks to hack. In essence, you’re creating a fictional internet, with enough depth to its underlying structure to be convincing. Not only that, but you also need to ensure that your simulated network responds according to rules that are consistent and understandable, but can be broken and manipulated by the player. Last year, AMD’s Threadripper CPUs took most of us by surprise and it has since been revealed that these high-end desktop CPUs weren’t actually a part of AMD’s original plan. In fact, there wasn’t even a financial proposal for them until quite late in the day. It was a project created by CPU architects and enthusiasts at AMD, but it worked, successfully knocking Intel’s 10-core Core i7-6950X CPU off the top spot. Memory speed matters with all current desktop CPUs, but there are definitely sweet spots that offer the best bang for your buck, especially when memory prices are so high. With Intel CPUs, it’s usually best to aim for at least 2666MHz, preferably 3000MHz or a little more, but you’ll see little benefit above 3200MHz. The same isn’t necessarily true for AMD CPUs, though, as their internal workings, specifically Infinity Fabric, are directly related to memory speed, so the faster your system memory, the faster Infinity Fabric can operate. We recommend using at least 3200MHz memory with mainstream Ryzen CPUs and opting for 3466MHz RAM yields benefits too. PROCESSORS TESTS: We use Custom PC RealBench, Cinebench and Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation, installed on Windows 10 Home 64-bit, and record the power draw of the test PC. These tests cover a broad range of performance characteristics, including image editing, gaming, video encoding and 3D rendering. That’s fast enough to download 50GB of data in under a minute, and if you think that sounds like an impossible feat, even for 802.11ac Wi-Fi, you’re right. Uniquely among this month’s routers, the X10 also includes a 60GHz 802.11ad radio, allowing compatible devices to communicate at up to 4.6Gb/sec. The catch is that 60GHz networking only works well over very short distances, so it’s mostly useful for same-room devices such as smart TVs; you won’t find it on mainstream laptops or tablets. Recently, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds received criticism because its large island maps were revealed to contain pre-made objects purchased from Unreal Engine’s asset store. The game was accused of being an ‘asset flip’, a derogatory term mainly directed towards games quickly cobbled together from existing assets and sold on Steam for a quick profit. Asset flips are one of the main arguments for better curation on Steam,where games spliced together from third-party assets can clog up the Steam store page, often obscuring other, better games from small developers. No Man’s Sky suffered one of the most controversial game releases in years. Originally launched in 2016, it delivered a colossal galaxy to explore, featuring billions of randomly generated star systems, each of which was orbited by colourful and diverse planets on which the player could seamlessly land and walk. Although the game looked gorgeous, in play, No Man’s Sky was disappointingly hollow. Its billions of planets all featured nearly identical content. Moreover, the game’s story was wafer-thin, and its combat and crafting systems were annoyingly lightweight. Airflow vs glass Last month’s case Labs test was interesting to me for a number of reasons. We saw some great offerings from several manufacturers, especially Lian Li with its fabulous Alpha 550X and also Cougar’s Panzer Evo. Both these cases looked great, being clad in several square metres of tempered glass with illuminated fans shining through the windows. A lot of case designs are travelling in this styling direction, but it’s only with big manufacturers such as Cooler Master that we see ranges big enough to offer both high airflow and tempered glass (or clear acrylic-covered) versions of the same case. THE DREMEL If you’re starting out in PC modding and have a limited budget, a Dremel or similar rotary tool is one of the best investments you can make.
