Readers of a certain age will no doubt have fond memories of the Super CC comic strips that were a regular feature in these pages for around 16 years. Written and drawn by the late artist, John Richardson, Super CC can probably be best described to those unfamiliar with the character and his adventures as sexist and misogynistic. A true dinosaur from the 1970s and ’80s, the likes of Super CC would never be commissioned in today’s world. But, with the blessing of John Richardson’s family, many of the original comic strips are being reprinted in book format. Bears Grill in Lenwade can be found on the Norwich road, not far from the city, with easy access from every direction. Before the pandemic, Rachel, owner of the Grill and daughter of Mike and June Key, was hosting regular meets, but Sunday 15 August was the first in 2021. This, however, was a special one held in memory of Mike Key, a man that meant so much to so many. At the time of Mike’s passing, restrictions were tight and a limited number of hot rodders attended his funeral, but now the plan was to make this a meet to remember. Chances are a good number of us are familiar with this scenario: the timbers in the loft sighing under the weight of a lifetime’s collection of hot rodding and drag racing literature. One such long-time rodder and reader, Gareth Rees from Cannock, Staffs, has decided it’s time to give his ceiling joists a break and thin out his extensive collection. Congratulations to Lee Johnstone’s family-driven, blown Chevy-powered Volvo P1800, Ain’t No Saint, for being selected as the UK entry in the Hot Wheels Legends Tour. Should it be deemed the overall winner, it will be immortalised as a Hot Wheels die-cast toy, and has already taken a step closer to that accolade by progressing through the semi-finals. Smeatharpe Airfield in Devon plays home to Dakota Raceway Southwest, a drag strip offering eighth-mile, street outlaw-style, heads-up racing. Having lay dormant throughout lockdown, the gates were thrown open once again in mid-July for the Dakota Raceway 1/8th mile heads up cash day. Hosted by the Straightliners team, race classes included front-wheel drive vehicles, but there was plenty of rear-wheel drive action to interest CC readers. By my reckoning, we’ve come full circle now. The only ‘as normal’ hot rod event I attended in 2020 was the NSRA Southern Swap Meet, and the last ‘as normal’ hot rod event I attended in 2021 was the NSRA Southern Swap Meet. Okay, it wasn’t that normal as it was held in November, not March, but the sun came out and it was great to be back amongst fellow hot rodders and racers at North Weald after 20 months away. One of the-oldest running rod runs in the country, the Kings Lynn Kruisers weekender, has had a hard time of it of late. These days known as the KLK Vehicle Extravaganza, it was cancelled last year due to Covid after being badly hit with adverse weather on the previous two occasions. Last month we took a peek behind the doors of Ipswich-based Gardiner Fabrications and came across Terry Howes’ Econoline van. We commented we would be taking a closer look at the build in a future issue and, true to our word, here’s what lies beneath the skin. Terry came across an ad for the ’64 Ford E100 Cargo Van in Ohio around five years ago and pressed the button to make it his. In 1984, Ghostbusters was a truly massive hit. Bigger even than Custom Car. Despite its enormous budget, for the time, of $30m, it grossed ten times that at the box office, making it the highest earning comedy film ever at the time, and one of the most successful films of the 1980s.
