Forgive a statement of the perishingly obvious, but this has been a peculiar year, has it not? And it continues to be. After Covid collapsed all its activities, Santa Pod pulled out all the stops and managed to resurrect a reduced approximation of a drag racing season. At the time of writing, the Model T build is now in its seventh month of construction and, whilst much has been achieved, there is still a lot to do. After a few years’ hibernation, it was decided to try and get the Surf Coast Cruisers up and running again. Adrian Mann, the driving force behind the revamp of the club, put a post out asking if, once lockdown had eased, anyone would be interested in meeting up for a cruise. That was enough to re-ignite interest in the club. An industrial estate in Hayle was chosen as the venue, allowing everyone from north and south Cornwall to travel along the A30 to meet at a fairly central location. From there, the cruise route would take in some B roads and a bit of theA30 to another industrial estate in Redruth. This month, while Super CC suffered an embarrassing bout of premature ejection, our heroes back in the office were in the process of suffering an equally embarrassing bout of premature rejection by the readership, due to the recent management decision to throw custom cars to the wind and replace them with Euroboxes, body kits and supercars. Stay safe is a term often bandied about these days, mainly in relation to the current pandemic, but that is not all inclusive. Staying safe plays an important part in all walks of life. Take drag racing for instance. We’ll be bringing you a feature on the recent NOT The European Finals in an upcoming issue, but there were a couple of runs worthy of a mention now. Both involved Funny Cars, and both highlighted how safe well-built modern drag race cars really are. Running against Andy Raw in a FC match race on the Friday, a huge blower explosion in Jason Phelps’ car shredded the body. Social distancing and mask wearing when appropriate is the name of the game these days, and both measures were in place on the last Sunday of July Carfeine meet. This new event popped up on my radar at the beginning of the year and I was planning on attending, until Covid intervened. But, as lockdown measures eased, the organisers decided to get the meet running again, with the strict proviso that people were sensible and adhered to the rules. Pre-event promotion proved a success Carfeine is held on the last Sunday of each month in the Cornish village of St Agnes. Over the years, General Motors has made a great play of not being involved with racing, yet its products have never been far from the track, whether that be circuit racing, endurance racing or drag racing. Here’s an interesting one – the 1983 ‘development programme’ GTP Corvette. Not a race car of course. At least not an official GM one.
