BOATIES visiting the southern Great Barrier Reef are encouraged to use 23 new public moorings recently installed to help minimise anchor damage to coral and other sensitive habitats at popular reef and island locations in the Capricorn-Bunker Group and Keppel Bay. Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) field management program assistant director Mark Read said using public moorings was an important action visitors could take to help protect the reef, “public moorings provide opportunities for tourism and recreational vessels to safely and securely access individual reefs while preventing harm to these sensitive environments,” Dr Read said. “Dropping an anchor into coral may only take a second, but will cause long-lasting or even irreparable damage to a reef.” This latest round of new moorings follows the installation of 60 additional…

A simple concept coupled with an innovative design has delivered an outcome that can see any Seabin installed remove up to 1.5 tons of waste from waterways every year. After launching in Australia six months ago, the Seabin story has gone from strength to strength. In May and June alone, 210 Seabins were installed in waterways around the world with over 50 marinas in Europe investing in Seabin units. BRUCE Fairlie’s childhood love of ship model making foretold a long and successful career designing and manufacturing fibreglass yachts and the creation of one of the most respected and longest standing yacht-building yards in Australia. DEB and I have been travelling through Asia for the past year on our sailing vessel Matilda, a forty three foot Hans Christian, Christina. During that time we have sailed through, or been at anchor, during a couple of nasty storms. However we were taken by surprise by what we were about to encounter. It was the south west monsoon season and so far it had been pretty gentle. Even though it had been benign we, however, had been witness to some fantastic lightning displays and fast moving storm fronts bringing torrential downpours. WE have owned our X-43, X-Pat, since 2010. We initially cruised around Pittwater and Sydney Harbour and then gradually went further afield. In December 2015 we set off on our first major trip to cruise the east and south coast of Tasmania. Like most who take the plunge we had no idea how we would get on living on the boat for two months. I HAD a small leak that would drip on the top of the chart table. It would appear after a lot of rain yet, while annoying, it did not appear to be too serious. After checking what was above the chart table that may leak after rain, I came to the conclusion it could very well be one of the handrails on the cabin top was letting water wick under the mounting pad. I deliberated for a while and in the end thought even if it was not the culprit, the job wasn’t an enormous task any way and the handrails did need a good refurbish. THE Snug Cove Safe Harbour marina project in the Port of Eden is underway with wave attenuator design and alignment finalised and preliminary works commenced. A drilling barge has arrived and is getting ready for work. Snug Cove, Eden is close to Bass Strait and is the only deepwater port between Sydney and Melbourne. The Snug Cove project has no connection with the marina project that has been proposed for Cattle Bay in the Port of Eden. The aim of the project is to provide an economic benefit for Eden and to improve the amenity and safety of boating in southern NSW.
