I ALWAYS remember the cautionary tale an old cruiser told me when he heard we were heading for distant shores. While crossing the Pacific he was becalmed and was slowly drifting toward a reef some miles in the distance. At first this did not appear to be a problem as he would just motor away if needed and then wait for the wind to return. However, when he tried to start the engine the starter failed. Having a spare starter motor on board he replaced it, but to his shock and amazement upon turning the key the new starter motor rotated the engine backward. DILI was always on the list of places we wanted to sail to, due to its proximity to Australia and because we knew it was still relatively untouched. So when we discovered there was a race/rally two weeks before the Sail Indonesia and that it ended in Kupang, where the Sail Indonesia fleet were checking in: decision made. We emailed Sail Timor-Leste who were extremely helpful and suddenly we were all organised for our first trip overseas on board Indian Summer 1. JONATHAN Neeves article regarding anchors and chain (November 2016) is spot on and should be the final say in dispelling the myths about the effect of catenary in anything more than light to moderate winds; that is, winds of less than 20 knots. I am surprised that many yachties still cling to the myth that catenary matters when it counts, winds above 20 knots. The internet has a number of calculators that measure the effect of catenary, the forces caused by different wind strengths and the pulling power of different anchors. I HAVE owned my 1991 Hunter 42 for six years, having imported it from Florida USA, simply because it is the boat I wanted and that model was never sold here. I have spent the last six years worrying about the fact that my 25 year old aluminium fuel tank had no inspection port. So I removed the mechanical fuel gauge sender and used my vacuum sump pump with a specially-made extension hose to suck up a sample off the bottom of the tank. COLLISION CONSIDERATIONS Collisions in boats can be dangerous even at low speed. Most of us understand the concept of determining collision risk by observing the background: if the object is moving forward against the background, we will pass behind it; if it is moving backward, we will pass ahead. If it is stationary, we will hit it. However Lewis Garnham, who has over fifty years boating experience, points out that this concept can be risky in crowded waters. For it to be accurate, he says, you need a distant horizon bearing point, as you might have at sea, on the forward quarter, against which another vessel’s relative bearing is assessed. LANDING at Hobart Airport in a howling southerly is usually a fraught affair. The weather tried to play a starring role during the four days of the My State Wooden Boat Festival AWBF), but it certainly did not dampen spirits. We landed on the tarmac with a heavy thump and a lot of rolling and yawing. My seat neighbour made many 'Signs of the Cross', so that helped. An amusing anecdote from the landing, however, came afterwards when everyone stood up to get their bags out of the overhead lockers. MY YACHT Seaka is a Top Hat built by Geoff Baker of Fibreglass Yachts back in 1969. For thirty-six years of her life she spent time in Port Hacking, Botany Bay, Sydney Harbour and Pittwater where she was raced.
