Short for Arts Décoratifs, from the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes (International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts) held in Paris in 1925, Art Deco originated in France just before World War I, proffering an optimistic, modern and glamorous style that inevitably ended with the abject misery and tragedy of global proportions that was World War II.
This movement reflected the cosmopolitan spirit of the early 20th century, tapping inspiration far beyond the Cubism and Fauvism of its European heartland, with inflections of the exotic from elements of Chinese, Japanese, ancient Egypt, and Mayan art.
