Making a big start! I’ve been reading and enjoying your magazine since 2014 and finally gave in to my brother-in-law’s attempts to persuade me to have a go at stitching in 2016. Not wanting to make things too easy for myself, I found a website that converted photos into cross stitch charts, found this picture on my computer and made a start. The design measures 51x38cm (20x15in). It took 57,408 stitches and one and a half years to complete it! The picture shows the Pamir rounding Cape Horn, heading back to her home port in Germany in 1945. Tragically, four years later, on the same trip, her cargo shifted and she capsized and sank. Understanding charts and keys Follow the steps below for an introduction to getting started, then use the simple instructions opposite to learn each stitch! Reading the chart Our charts are printed with coloured squares containing a symbol that represents squares to be stitched on the fabric. The key alongside the chart will tell you what colour thread each symbol corresponds to, so you know which one to thread your needle with (see right). Where to start The centre of our cross stitch charts is marked out using small arrows on the edge of each side of the chart.
