Paper chase Q I’d like to stitch one of your charts on perforated paper rather than aida. Is it at all possible to do this, Angels? Fiona Stratford, Cheshire A It’s perfectly possible to transfer designs intended for aida onto perforated paper, but there are some things to watch out for. You can use whole stitches, backstitch and French knots, and specialist threads such as metallic, plus add beads and other embellishments in a project on paper. However, you won’t be able to do fractionals as paper doesn’t have threads to stitch between. You’ll be floating on air as you stitch this dreamy alphabet with its gossamer-winged butterflies swooping and flitting from letter to letter. The pretty pastel colour scheme adds to the delicate appearance, but you could also use deeper colours to coordinate with an existing room, or even add a few metallics for a magical finish. A romantic floral background will make these ornate letters take flight – simply stiffen some pretty fabric with card, as we did here, to create an elegant nameplate for a child’s bedroom. You can also personalise wash bags and bed linen, or just stitch a single initial onto smaller items such as handkerchiefs and hand towels for a very classy gift. You could also use a circular object as a template, such as a roll of tape. 2 Cut them out and use double-sided tape to stick one to your stitching. Trim away the excess fabric. On the back, mark the cutting line and attach a beak poking out by about 1cm (¼in). 3 Cut two lengths of thread or ribbon to 8cm (3in). Attach a bead to the end of each.
