Shadow work embroidery is an ancient, hand-stitched fabric art dating back as early as the 3rd century BC. Originating in India, a shadow effect is produced by hand stitching a design on the wrong side of a semitransparent fabric in a closed herringbone or satin stitch (A). Viewed from the right side, the solid fill of the design shows a color shadow outlined by the anchor stitches. MODERN INTERPRETATION Shadow work collections are available online, usually on sites specializing in heirloom sewing and embroidery. Always follow the accompanying directions to ensure success when stitching the designs. With a bit of creative thinking, some traditional embroidery designs are adaptable to imitate shadow effects. Little ones will love to wear a hooded towel sporting an appliqué whale. Follow the instructions on page 55 to embroider and construct the hooded towel. However, use the following appliqué steps for the whale design, using scraps of print cotton. • Embroider the water and placement line. • Center one appliqué fabric scrap over the placement line. Embroider the tacking stitches. • Remove the hoop from the machine, but don’t remove the stabilizer from the hoop. Using small scissors, carefully trim the appliqué fabric as close to the tacking stitches as possible. • Place the hoop back onto the machine and embroider the outline stitches and waterspout. • Remove the hoop from the machine and the fabric from the hoop. LAYOUT & DESIGN • When working with small hoops, design layout is crucial. Examine a large design and notice the design elements that overlap. The overlaps indicate when and where to rehoop in order to break up the design for a small hoop. • Select designs that don’t have to precisely align. Free-flowing designs, such as florals, are great to use because they’re less structured and are easily manipulated to fit a curved layout. • Experiment with the design layout to create a continuous design with 1/8" or less overlap. Eliminating gaps between the designs results in a finished design that looks like it was stitched in a large hoop. PREPARE • Print templates of the chosen design. Follow these tips when embroidering freestanding lace designs. • FSL designs are intensive, so keep multiple new needles on hand during embroidery. If creating multiple envelopes and wrappers, change the needle when it makes a ticking sound. • To create clean-looking FSL without having to trim any threads on the design wrong side, turn off the automatic cutting feature on the machine. At the beginning of each color change, pull the bobbin thread to the hoop right side. Hold the thread tails for the first few stitches to tie on, and then cut the tails close to the stabilizer. • If desired, select three different thread colors and use a different one for the background, decorative background and scallops, doves and construction.…
