THE NAME ‘JASPER’ MEANS ‘spotted stone’, and is derived from both the Anglo-French word jaspre and the Greek word iaspis. Jasper is part of the chalcedony family of gemstones, but was put into its own classification group due to its grainy structure. It is generally an opaque stone, which can be found in many colours including red, brown, pink, yellow, green, grey, white and shades of blue and purple. Jasper stones are usually multicoloured, striped or spotted; while uniformly coloured stones are rare. These patterns are caused by the flow of water containing minerals, sediment and volcanic ash, which are saturated with silica, through the rocks where the jasper is forming.
