Surrounded by acres of farmland, forests and meandering streams, Scheie Lutheran Church is in picturesque Mabel in Fillmore County. When the first Norwegian immigrants arrived here in 1853, they set up homesteads, farmed the land and established a small congregation.
Accounts vary slightly, but it appears that the first organized group met on June 8, 1857, in the home of Thore Olson Faa. Soon after, the families worshipped together in a log cabin on Jacob Elefson’s land. They named their congregation the First Evangelical Lutheran Church.
