I make no secret of the fact I’m obsessed with mushrooms. I think they’re phenomenal things – half plant, half animal, half alien again (don’t check my maths) – and I never fail to stop on the trail to admire their weirdness. Some are phenomenally beautiful, with gorgeous waxy red caps, or huge frilly trumpets, or even ones that turn blue when you cut into them. Some are reasonably grotesque looking; gnarled and slimy, or dripping ink-like goo all over the place. But I find them all fascinating. Mushrooms, fungi, slime mould and lichens abound year-round in the UK, and like berries, leaves and other nature-based paraphernalia, they also reflect the seasons.
